Hibner, Hanes, VanWyk victorious at I-35 Speedway
Tyler Hibner won the USRA Modified main event.
A field of 116 racers checked in to I-35 Speedway for the McCarthy Auto Group Season Opener. Fans were treated to three- and sometimes four-wide racing as drivers put on a thrilling night of ultra-fast competitive action.
The USRA B-Mods hit the track and started an almost three-race streak of green-to-checkered finishes.
Dylan VanWyk made his first trip to I-35 Speedway a successful one, picking up the win. It wasn’t an easy one for VanWyk as he had to get past I-35 Speedway veteran Daniel Harris, who led the first three-quarters of the race.
VanWyk made a daring move going between two lapped cars using them as a pick to get by Harris to win. Jace Whitt, who came into his own last season came home third. Corey Myers followed up a great 2022 season by finishing fourth and Dakota Girard finished fifth after a great battle with Kyler Girard.
Another defending track champion returned to McCarthy Auto Group victory lane in the first race of 2023 with another green-to-checkered finish.
Nic Hanes said “I don’t need your rocking chair” just yet as he parked his hot rod in McCarthy Auto Group victory lane. Hanes had a great battle with Tommy Ground and his son, Kameron Hanes, early on before eventually pulling away.
Ground finished second followed by the Kameron Hanes in third and another battle ensued with Gerald Wahwahsuck finishing fourth and Jeff Dixon fifth.
In the USRA Modifieds yet another defending champion rolled his car to a win to start off the 2023 season.
Tyler Hibner picked up where he left off in 2022 as he celebrated another win at I-35 Speedway. Houston Johnson made a last-lap pass on Ethan Braaksma to finish second while Braaksma finished third in his first trip to I-35 Speedway.
Lee Hibner battled up front early on, and eventually fell to fourth, followed by a hard-charging Scott Bryant in fifth.
Join us next week for Premier Lubricants Night at I-35 Speedway as we kick off the I-35 Speedway Fan of the Week and see who takes their hot rod to McCarthy Auto Group victory Lane.
