Summit USRA Nationals finales to Wolff, Thornton, Gillmore, Clinton, Day and Pursley
Tyler Wolff won the USRA Modified main event.
The fifth and final night of action for the 9th Annual Summit USRA Nationals took place Saturday at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo., with four frequent visitors and two fresh faces finding their way into victory lane.
The first of six championship main events began with the Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks delivering an entertaining 15-lapper that saw Phil Dixon of Crosby, Texas, cross the finish line first, but failed his post-race tech inspection which handed the Summit USRA Nationals trophy and $1,000 winner’s check to Craig Pursley of New Waverly, Texas, .
Colton Tanner of Corsicana, Texas, who won Friday night’s preliminary feature, held off early leader Albert McCall Jr. of Crandall, Texas, for third while Travis Hudnall of Liberty, Texas, claimed the fourth spot ahead of Enid, Okla., racers Jason Weber and Steve Blunk.
Craig Pursley won the Sunoco USRA Factory Stock main event.
Along with the Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks, the USRA Limited Mods had their name on the marquee at the Summit USRA Nationals and produced a spectacular finale Saturday night.
Rowdy Day made the long drive from Greenville, Texas, worth his time as the USRA Limited Mod national points leader scored his 13th win of the season from the 13th starting spot.
Eighth-starting Conner Williams of Sibley, La., took the top spot away from race-long leader Kyle Wiens with five laps to go, but saw his hopes of victory disappear with just a half-lap to go when Day snuck underneath Williams exiting turn two.
Day walked away from Williams to seize the $1,000 winner’s paycheck and all but assure himself of a national title. Meanwhile, Aaron Roy of Texarkana, Texas, got third after Wiens failed post-race tech.
Fourth went to Shannon Hartline of Ivanhoe, Texas, and fifth was 12th-starting Eric Luttrell of Kaufman, Texas. Friday’s winner Timmy Johnson was sixth and the rest of the top 10 were Adam Roy, Ryan Reeves, Brandon Williams and Travis Graves.
Rowdy Day won the USRA Limited Mod main event.
A victim of door-to-door clashes following a three-wide green flag start, Decorah, Iowa’s Josh Ludeking went from first to last in one lap as he brought out the first caution in the USRA Hobby Stock finale as the field completed the opening lap.
Dylan Nelson, who won a preliminary feature on Thursday, took control when the 30-lap feature got rolling while Dylan Nelson, Scott Dobel of Manly, Iowa, and Dustin Gulbrandson of Sioux Falls, S.D., battled back and forth in pursuit of the leader.
Nelson slipped high and opened the door for Clinton to take over at the halfway mark with Dobel following into second, but nothing was going to stop Clinton as the West Union, Iowa, racer won his 17th feature of the season and his second straight Summit USRA Nationals crown.
Clinton, who won two prelims and the Summit Shootout on Wednesday, pocketed $1,500 tonight and an additional $1,050 since Tuesday.
Dustin Gulbrandson, who won the 2020 Summit USRA Nationals when it was hosted by the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City, Iowa, had to settle for second in Saturday’s championship contest while Dobel bested Rockwell’s Iowa’s Carter Koop for third and fifth went to Ludeking, who battled back from his opening-lap mishap.
After Nelson was disqualified follow the race, Jeremy Crimmins was paid for sixth with Riley Crimmins, Steve Larson, Tracy Halouska and Nick Brady rounding out the top 10.
Dylan Clinton won the USRA Hobby Stock main event.
Another familiar face found his way into victory lane after Springfield’s Ryan Gillmore led all 35 laps to win the USRA B-Mod main event on Saturday.
The 2017 USRA B-Mod National Champion won two additional features during the week and earned a $2,000 reward for his flawless feature race effort. Earlier in the week he also captured his second Summit Shootout victory in three years.
A pair of two-time USRA B-Mod national champs—Brandon Hare of Elma, Iowa, and Kris Jackson of Lebanon, Mo.—chased Gillmore throughout the race but had to settle for second and third at the checkered flag.
Another former USRA national champ and Summit USRA Nationals winner, J.C. Morton of Springfield held off Colson Kirk of Urbana in a great battle for fourth-place money.
Reece Solander, Jon Sheets, Shadren Turner, national points leader Joe Chisholm and Mitchell Franklin snagged the remaining positions inside the top 10.
Ryan Gillmore won the USRA B-Mod main event.
Medieval USRA Stock Cars welcomed Dylan Thornton of Santa Maria, Calif., back to the winner’s circle for the fourth time in five nights of racing after he led all 40 laps of the main event from start to finish despite heavy pressure from several challengers.
Seven-time USRA Stock Car National Champion Mitch Hovden was the first as he followed Thornton from the drop of the green but contact on lap 15 with the leader forced officials to put Hovden to the rear of the pack for the final 25-lap race to the finish.
Pat Graham of Ankeny, Iowa, and Plymouth, Iowa’s Josh Zieman both pressured Thornton late. Graham suffered mechanical issues and failed to finish while Zieman’s best effort could only net a second-place finish.
With his $2,500 triumph, Thornton brought his five-day bank boost to $4,300 and finished the job from last year when he won everything but the Saturday night finale.
Behind Thornton and Zieman, 11th-starting David Hendrix of Waynesville was third with Dean Wille of Warrensburg claiming fourth and fifth going to Urbana’s Mason Beck, who started 28th of the 31 starters.
Chad Clancy started 21st and finished sixth with Jeff Dixon coming from 22nd to grab seventh. Eighth, ninth and tenth were Andrew Borchardt, Myles Michehl and Ed Griggs.
Dylan Thornton won the Medieval USRA Stock Car main event.
Capping off Saturday night’s recurring theme, the most dominant driver of the week in the USRA Modifieds continued his mastery of the ‘Diamond of Dirt Tracks’ as Tyler Wolff of Fayetteville, Ark., led all 40 laps to win the final feature of the 2022 Summit USRA Nationals.
Along with his two preliminary wins during the week, Wolff increased his take home pay to $5,000 after Saturday’s effort.
Engine builder Kevin Stoa of Albert Lea, Minn., came out on top of a spirited battle with reigning track champion Dillon McCowan of Urbana to claim runner-up money while national points leader Tyler Davis of Haysville, Kan., held off Archie’s Matt Johnson for fourth.
Callaway Raceway track champ Dustin Hodges was sixth, Brandon Givens finished seventh and Lakeside Speedway track champion Nic Bidinger was eighth. Ryan Middaugh and Jeff Cutshaw were ninth and tenth.
