Gorham grabs first victory at Vado Speedway Park; Scott stomps USRA Modified field

Johnny Scott won the USRA Modified main event.

Johnny Scott won the USRA Modified main event.

Johnny Scott made his return to USRA Modified racing on Topless Night at the Vado Speedway Park on Saturday and stomped the field to win for the first time at his hometown track since July 6, 2019. Meanwhile, Greg Gorham raced to his first victory in the USRA B-Mod feature.

The USRA B-Mods were up for their 20-lap main and Donnie Newcomb took the lead from the pole on the initial green flag and led the early portion of the event with heavy pressure from Gorham, Justin Allen, Jesse Haynie, Lucas Ward and Dustin Smith before Gorham was able to power by into the lead and overtake the top spot.

With Gorham out front, he set the pace while Ward was trying his best to get by on the bottom and Haynie was working the top side to try to work into the lead as well.

Gorham was able to withstand the pressure from both drivers and took the lead back to race away with his first feature win after Ward snuck by for a brief second.

Ward ran second with Haynie, Smith and Allen in the top five.

Greg Gorham won the USRA B-Mod main event.

The URSA Modified 25-lap feature was the final event of the night with Terry Tipton and Tom Georges on the front row. Tipton took command at the drop of the green with Georges and Jimmy Ray along for the ride, but a first-lap crash shuffled the starting lineup.

Eighth-starting Johnny Scott, in his 2022 Modified debut at Vado, hopped to the high side of the track and blasted his way through the field up to second and ran alongside Tipton for several laps until he took over the top spot and ran off into the night.

Scott ran away to a nearly half-lap advantage over Ray, who worked his way by Tipton into second and tried to keep Scott within his sights.

With Scott dominating the event out front, all eyes were on Nathan Smith, who started 21st, Nick Rivera, who went to the tail after the opening lap crash and both Fito and Jake Gallardo, who also both went to the tail after being involved in a turn four crash early in the event.

They stormed through the field to finish fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

The Vado Speedway Park gets back to action next Saturday, Oct. 1, with Rancho Milagro Fan & Driver Appreciation Night where the first 1,000 fans get into the grandstand area for free.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30.

For fans not able to attend in person, watch live at WatchFYE.tv.
