Stahl, rain winners at Fayette County Speedway
Brad Stahl (35) won the USRA Tuner main event and 2022 track championship.
Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, was able to dodge the first several cells of rain on Friday night, but the weather ultimately moved in and claimed wins over three of the four USRA classes.
With just two feature races completed, the clouds let loose just a handful of laps into the USRA Hobby Stock main event.
In the USRA Tuner class, Castalia’s Brad Stahl was able to grab his fourth victory of the season as he worked his way to the front early on in the race after starting fourth. Postville’s Levi Hansmeier started on the pole and managed a runner-up finish, while fellow Postville racer Josh Harms took third.
In fourth was Katie Stahl of Castalia, while Holden Mathis of Monona grabbed his first career top five in his rookie season.
The race was the final track points night for the USRA Tuners as the Stahls finished with the top two spots: Brad in first and wife Katie in second. Rookie Braiden Schaufenbuel (New Hampton) finished third in the points, while Clayton Harms of Postville was fourth and Dylan Lerch (West Union), also a rookie, took fifth.
In the USRA Hobby Stock feature, which was interrupted by the rain, pole sitter Justin Lichty of Waterloo was in the top spot. The race will resume Friday night, Aug. 26, followed by make-up features for the USRA B-Mods and Medieval USRA Stock Cars. A full show for the four USRA classes will follow as drivers will compete for Sulmmit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points.
The Hobby Stock points standings are led by West Union’s Dylan Clinton, with Paul Seabrooke (Decorah) 46 points behind him and Darly Moss (West Union) 77 points out of the top spot.
In the track's B-Mod standings, Dan Hovden holds a 19-point advantage over Alex Zwanziger of Walker. Kyle Anderson of Decorah, who was not in the pits Friday night at West Union due to a rollover wreck the previous weekend at Deer Creek Speedway, is 73 points back, while Waukon’s Tim Heins is 74 points behind Hovden.
In the makeup feature, Decorah’s Phillip Ihde will start on the pole with Hovden rolling off sixth, Heins starting seventh, and Zwanziger slated to start eighth.
The Fayette County Speedway track points standings in the Stock Car division is the tightest battle of the season with Decorah’s Kevin Donlan ahead of Waukon’s Dan Jones for the top spot. Mitch Hovden (Decorah) is third and faces an 84-point deficit.
In Friday night’s makeup feature, Brayden Gjere of Mabel, Minn., will start first, with Hovden starting on the outside pole and Jones starting third. Donlan will start the race in sixth.
