Gallardo, Burton meet in Vado victory lane

Jonathan Burton won the Medieval USRA Stock Car main event.

The state-of-the-art Vado Speedway Park was back in action Saturday with the final Meet the Drivers Night of the season and the theme of the night was streaks... Win streaks.

Jonathan Burton outlasted a furious charge from 13th-starting Josh Cain to win a caution-plagued Medieval USRA Stock Car feature.

Burton, who started fifth, took the lead from polesitter Sherman Barnett early and then not only withstood two rain delays but also a wild race for the lead between himself, Barnett, Bryan Bennett, Rob Moseley and Cain throughout the event, which was slowed by more than a half dozen caution flags throughout the 20-lapper.

When the checkered finally flew, it was Burton who came out of top, nipping Cain at the line for the win. Bennett crossed the line third for his efforts.

The final event of the night was the USRA Modified 25-lap feature and the field of 21 competitors put on a show for the fans as Jake Gallardo continued the streak of either he, or his dad Fito Gallardo, winning the USRA Modified feature to a whopping nine in a row.

Tom Georges led the opening lap before Rocko Gallardo got out front and drove off to a sizeable lead before a caution flag brought the field back to his rear bumper for the restart. On the restart, Carlos Ahumada Jr. blasted by into the lead and led several laps before eighth-starting Jake Gallardo raced by on a restart into the top spot and took command out front.

Jake Gallardo worked his way away from the field while Fito Gallardo, who started seventh, worked by Ahumada as well into the runner-up spot.

Jake Gallardo hit his marks lap after lap and raced to the win ahead of Fito Gallardo and Ahumada.

The Vado Speedway Park will be back in action Saturday, Aug. 6, with another Hot City Nights event where fans from Deming, Silver City, Bayard, Hurley and Santa Clara will be admitted into the grandstands for just $5 with a valid ID.

Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30.

For fans not able to attend in person, all events held during the 2022 season at the Vado Speedway Park will also be live at WatchFYE.tv. For upcoming schedule information and tickets, visit VadoSpeedwayPark.com.
