The state-of-the-art Vado Speedway Park in Vado, N.M., was back in action Saturday, June 18, for the track’s annual Father’s Day Weekend special which featured USRA Modifieds, Medieval USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods competing in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.

Twenty-three Hacienda Carpet & Tile USRA B-Mods took the green for the 20-lap main event with Enrique Barraza sitting on the pole at the start. Barraza, Daryl Lackey and Jay Hill battled out front early for the top spot, while 13th-starting Christy Barnett worked her way forward into the top five.

Barnett began to pressure the leaders out front with Eric McNutt in the hunt as well. Once Barnett was able to get by into the top spot, she held on for the win but not without heavy pressure from McNutt, who crossed the line in second.

Greg Gorham charged from his 22nd starting spot to finish third with Albuquerque visitor Hunter Sandy racing from 15th up to fourth and Jose De La Fuente rounding out the top five.

The S&J Automotive Medieval USRA Stock Car main event was up next with Sherman Barnett jumping into the early race lead from his pole position starting spot and pacing the field early in the 20-lap event.

While Barnett led, Rob Moseley and Bryan Bennett worked into second and third early and Moseley was the first to slip by Barnett into the top spot and take off out front.

Once out front, Moseley tried to drive off, but Bennett was roaring around the outside of the speedway and raced to Moseley’s outside. The duo ran side by side for the lead for several laps until Bennett used his high side momentum to capture the lead and was able to drive to victory.

Moseley crossed the line in second with R.C. Combs racing from ninth up to third, followed by Daniel Sanchez Jr. and Fred Gibson.

The final event of the night was the Rancho Milagro URSA Modified 25-lapper and Jake Gallardo raced from his eighth starting spot to his second straight victory after battling with his dad, Fito Gallardo, side-by-side out front for a number of laps during the mid-point of the race.

Jimmy Ray and Rocko Gallardo led the field to green and battled out front for the top spot for the first few laps until Fito Gallardo raced to the inside of his brother to take the lead. Once Fito Gallardo got out front he tried to stretch his advantage, but Jake Gallardo was on the move early as well and pulled up alongside to battle.

Nick Rivera and Jake Boles were in a good battle with Ray for the third spot, while Fito Gallardo and Jake Gallardo duked it out at the front of the field.

Jake Gallardo eventually raced by into the lead to pick up the win with Fito Gallardo second at the checkered flag. Rivera bested Boles for third with Ray rounding out the top five finishers.

The Vado Speedway Park will be back in action this coming Saturday, June 25, with another Hot City Nights event. Gates open at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 7:30.
