Hovden cashes big check while Donlan, Moss, Anderson also find good fortune at Fayette County Speedway
Daryl Moss won the USRA Hobby Stock main event.
It was the most exciting night of action yet this season at Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, as four Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series classes provided plenty of action all night long.
The USRA B-Mods had $1,250 on the line Friday night and Dan Hovden of Decorah cashed in on the big payday with his third straight win at the 3/8-mile speedway. Trevor Fecht of Allison started on the outside pole and led the first several laps, but it didn’t take long for Hovden to move to the top spot from his fourth-place starting spot.
Ben Moudry of Protivin was the hard charger for the night as he advanced six spots in the 30-lap feature to take second while Josh Roney of Postville was third. Fecht finished fourth in the race while Kyle Anderson of Decorah rounded out the top five.
The USRA Hobby Stock feature race was definitely one to remember as West Union’s own Darly “Dangerous” Moss parked his No. 5 car in victory lane for the first time in nearly 25 years.
“It was probably ‘97 or ‘98 the last time I got a feature win,” said the veteran fan favorite driver after the win. “This one means a lot to me.”
Moss dedicated the win to his longtime friend and pit man Brett Hanson, who passed away unexpectedly over the winer.
Moss advanced 11 spots in the race to take the win as Aaron Kleppe of Cedar Rapids took the runner-up spot. In third was West Union’s Dylan Clinton, who had won the previous four races at the speedway.
Clinton was challenging for the lead with five laps left in the feature when he and leader Troy Hovey (Cresco) made contact. Hovey had led every lap to that point, but suffered significant damage from the contact and retired his car to the pits. Clinton was penalized for the caution and sent to the back of the pack, but was able to work his way up to third.
In fourth was Rich Clinton of Elkader, while Calmar’s B.J. Dahl took fifth.
The USRA Tuner feature was the race of the night as six different drivers challenged for the lead at one point or another in the 10-lapper. In the end, it was Jeremiah Anderson of La Crosse, Wisc., who crossed the line first. He battled intensely with the top six finishers for the race, as New Hampton’s Braiden Schaufenbuel took second and Justin Anderson of Holmen, Wisc., was third.
In fourth was Castalia’s Brad Stahl, while Josh Hills of Elkader took fifth. In sixth was Isaiah Holzer of Holmen, Wisc., who led the race on the white flag lap.
The Medieval USRA Stock Car class had a season-high 21 entries at the start of the night as Decorah’s Kevin Donlan was the top dog as he led it from green to checkered in the feature. The win is Donlan’s second of 2022 at FCS.
In second was Mitch Hovden of Decorah, while Brandon Dietrich of Waukon was third. Fourth place went to fellow Waukon driver Dan Jones, while Kyle Falck charged ahead eight spots in the race to take fifth.
The action will resume at Fayette County Speedway next Friday night for weekly racing.
