Jones, Stahl, Clinton, Hovden victorious at Fayette County Speedway
Dan Jones won the Medieval USRA Stock Car main event.
It was a beautiful evening for USRA racing Friday night in West Union, Iowa, at Fayette County Speedway as a trio of repeat winners and one new winner took the checkered flag at the 3/8-mile dirt speedway.
The Medieval USRA Stock Car feature race was the one class that saw a new feature winner to make it four different winners through four races so far this season.
It was Waukon’s Dan Jones who led it from wire to wire to pick up his first victory of the 2022 season. Jones started on the pole and held off a bid from fellow Waukon driver Brady Link to get the win.
Decorah’s Mitch Hovden crossed the line third, while hard charger Brayden Gjere of Mabel, Minn., was fourth as he moved ahead five spots in the race. Rounding out the top five was Kevin Donlan of Decorah.
In a thrilling USRA Tuner main event, Castalia’s Brad Stahl kept his last name perfect in the winner’s circle as he parked it in Victory Lane for the third time of the season. His wife, Katie, took the other win two weeks ago.
Stahl had to work for the win, as he navigated past five cars in the feature to get the win. He and both Timothy Hanson (New Hampton) and David Balik (Fort Atkinson) were in a furious three-car battle for the lead at the midway point of the race, but Balik brought out a caution and left the race open for Stahl to take.
New Hampton young gun Braiden Schaufenbuel worked his way up to the runner-up spot in the race, while Hanson settled for third and Balik worked his way back to fourth after starting at the rear of the pack. In fifth was Josh Hills of Elkader.
Another heated battle for the win occurred in the USRA Hobby Stock division as West Union’s Dylan Clinton improved to a perfect four-for-four on the season. Clinton started 8th in the race, but worked his way through the field and got around Paul Seabrooke midway through the 20-lap feature.
Seabrooke, who had finished runner-up to Clinton in the first three races of the summer, crossed the line in third after Troy Hovey of Cresco was able to pass him with two laps left in the race.
In fourth was Calmar’s Junior Boyer, while Arthur Schott of Clermont rounded out the top five for his best finish of 2022.
In the USRA B-Mod feature race, it was all Kyle Anderson (Decorah) through the first 15 laps of the race, but while leading with five laps to go, he suffered a mechanical issue that forced him to forfeit his lead. Inheriting the lead was Decorah’s Dan Hovden, who captured his second straight win at the West Union speedway.
Tim Heins of Waukon took second place, while Alex Zwanziger of Walker took third. In fourth was Decorah’s Ryan Thorsten, while Fayette’s Wes Crawford claimed the fifth spot.
Racing is set to return to Fayette County Speedway on Friday night as all four Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series classes will be in action. The night will feature a B-Mod special with an increased purse.
