Dillon McCowan is the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national and rookie points leader in the USRA Modified division.

As the racing season runs through the final days of July and into August, visions of big checks, confetti and national championships begin to creep into the minds of Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series racers.

One of the biggest stories of the 2021 campaign is the success of 17-year-old Dillon McCowan of Urbana, Missouri. Not only does the youngster sit atop the USRA Modified national point but does so with a firm grip on the division’s rookie of the year title.

He sits second in the points for the PBM Performance Products Central Region driven by MVT behind Tyler Hibner of Chillicothe, Mo., who ranks second behind McCowan in the national standings.

Mitch Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, has an unprecedented eighth national championship in the Medieval USRA Stock Cars in his crosshairs with fellow Winneshiek County competitor Kevin Donlan and Fort Dodge, Iowa’s Myles Michehl sitting second and third, respectively.

Even though the competition gets tougher each year in the USRA B-Mods, so does Jim Chisholm it seems. The defending national champ from Osage, Iowa, has a slim lead over Dan Hovden of Decorah, Iowa, and two-time national champion Kris Jackson of Lebanon, Mo.

Tyler Schlumbohm is clinging to a 46-point cushion over fellow Sioux Falls, S.D., speedster Dustin Gulbrandson in the Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stock class. While Gulbrandson is seeking his seventh title in eight seasons, Schlumbohm is chasing his first. Not far behind is Josh Ludeking of Decorah, Iowa.

In the USRA Late Models, Lucas Peterson of Grand Meadow, Minn., is in position to score his third consecutive national title. Max Nelson of Princeton, Minn., and Steven O'Brien Jr. of Red Wing, Minn., are currently filling out the rest of the top three positions. Gopher State drivers hold the top five spots while Wisconsin drivers are sixth through tenth.

Texas racers claim seven of the top ten slots in the USRA Tuner standings led by David Thompson of Mesquite, Texas. Jett Hefti of Kemp, Texas—who turned 16 in May—is currently second and Daniel Thompson of Mesquite, Texas, sits third.

Staying in the Lone Star State, Cory Williams of Slaton, Texas, has a big early lead in the USRA Limited Mods with Jonathan Powers of Iowa Park, Texas, and Steven Ashcraft of Forney, Texas, chasing him.

Meanwhile, Dallas driver Walter Hamilton eyes his second straight Sunoco USRA Factory Stock crown as he holds a scant 21-point lead over Chris Davis of Wills Point, Texas. Third in the class standings is Don Jensen of Terrell, Texas.

Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series competitors from coast to coast and border to border will be back behind the wheel this weekend as they look to add inventory to their trophy rooms.

Nationals points are awarded only at the Summit USRA Southern Nationals (November 3-6) for drivers in the Limited Mod and Factory Stock divisions.
