After Westover’s woes, Sanders escapes Lawton with ARMS honors
Rodney Sanders won the USRA Modified main event.
A talented field of competitors unloaded their USRA Modifieds at the Lawton Speedway on Saturday for the sixth event of the 2021 campaign for the American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports.
With a $2,000 check sitting in victory lane and awaiting the winner of the 30-lap main event, polesitter Kevin Rowland led the first lap by a nose over Kale Westover, but Westover took command of the race the next time around.
Following a flurry of caution flags in the first few laps, four-time USMTS national champion Rodney Sanders jumped into second place a few laps later while he and Westover disappeared from the rest of the pack to settle it among themselves.
After a couple of attempts by Sanders to snag the lead away from Westover, the track’s USRA Modified points leader eyed his fifth feature win of the season at the legendary 1/4-mile red clay oval.
With 21 of the scheduled 30 laps in the books, the lead duo was navigating lapped traffic when hard contact with an infield tractor by Westover resulted in terminal damage that forced him out of the race.
From there, Sanders set his machine on cruise control and sailed to his second ARMS victory of the season.
Rowland came out on top of a spirited battle with points leader Triston Dycus to take home second-place money while Sean Gaddis and 10th-starting Colton Horner rounding out the top five.
Max Eddie Thomas came from 18th on the grid to finish sixth and Chris Huckeba snagged seventh. Vince Lucas, who won the most recent ARMS main event June 12 at the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas, earned an eighth-place paycheck, Jason Hilliard nabbed ninth and Kenny Gaddis rebounded from an early-race dust-up to complete the top 10.
Kenny Gaddis—along with McCreery and Thomas—each pocketed an extra $100 before the show even began. At every ARMS event, series officials randomly draw three drivers’ names during the pit meeting with each driver winning a $100 cash bonus. To win this award, the driver must attend the pit meeting and have competed in the previous ARMS event.
Travis Bragg qualified seventh but blew an engine at the end of his heat race and was unable to take the green flag for the feature race.
Dycus remains atop the points standings with a 10-point advantage (464 to 454) over Thomas. Huckeba is third with 441 markers followed by Sean Gaddis (416), Kenny Gaddis (396), Michael Walker (388), Joe Duvall (374), McCreery (373) Jake Gallardo (295) and Rowland (284), with 120 different racers earning points in the first six shows of 2021.
USRA Limited Mods joined the program Saturday and it was track points leader Shane Little gaining the win over Josh Cournoyer with Trevor Foley, Terrell Evans and Payton Zentgraf finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Another track points leader, Keyton Adams, scored the checkers in the USRA Tuner feature race. Logan Morschhauser, Brian Huckabay, Kaleb Watson and Brandon Pedigo rounded out the top five.
ARMS ends July on Funky note: “It’s exactly what you’ve saved your lunch money for,” quipped racer-turned-promoter Joe Duvall as he discussed the 2021 edition of the Club91 Funkadelic Dirt Track & Honky Tonk Extravaganza coming Friday and Saturday, July 30-31, for the American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports.
The Cowboy 100 takes place Friday at the Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla., while the Beer : 30 set for Saturday at the Creek County Speedway in Kellyville, Okla. Each race pays no less than $2,000 to win.
In addition to the series regulars, other popular and talented racers planning to bear ARMS in the Sooner State at least once this weekend include Jared Baird, Justin Cartwright, Cam Case, Chad Davis, Tyler Davis, Brandon Dean, Ho Dean, Kashton Denton, Brandon Givens, Jim Gress, Nathan Hagar, Bobby Mayfield, Jason Payton, Andy Morris, Jack Sartain, Greg Skaggs, Mark Smith, Nathan Smith, Ryan Taylor, Gene Weaver, Collin Wiseley, Joe Wright, Randy Timms and more.
The ARMS Treaty: At every American Racer Modified Series events, racers will compete for series points as well as Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national and regional points. Sanctioned racetracks may also award track points at their discretion. At season’s end, the inaugural ARMS points champion will pocket no less than $4,000 of the nearly $20,000 points fund.

There is a $100 entry fee at each event.
Two provisional starting spots will be awarded at each event to the two drivers ranked highest in series points that did not qualify for the main event. Each driver is eligible for two (2) provisionals.
The 2021 points fund will award no less than $4,000 to the champion and $1,000 for the 10th-place finisher. What’s more, any driver racing in at least 80% of the events that fails to finish among the final top 10 will get a $500 points fund check. Dozens of contingency awards will also be doled out during race nights and at season’s end.
