New car, same result: Folk wins again at Humboldt

HUMBOLDT, Kan. - Some racers are amazing beyond words. I know, another Justin "Whitey" Folk story. But, my friends, this one is really something.

I don't know why he built a new car this week. Maybe he was bored. But, when he got to the track at 6:00 p.m. with a plain white race car instead of the complicated graphics and sponsors usually displayed, it attracted considerable attention. Including tech inspectors, who pronounced the car illegal due to a too high frame rail. What to do? Load up, of course, drive like hell the 10 miles home, unload, rebuild and be back at the track at 7:30.

Quite honestly, the car didn't look that good in the heat. It looked like, well, a new car. Bugs, you know.

But, when the top ten re-drew for the feature, Folk came up with outside pole. Problem? To his left was Jesse Stovall, who's nothing short of lightning quick; hard to beat even when you know what your car's going to do.

When the green dropped, Whitey drops the hammer, and he's gone! Shot out of a cannon, so to speak. Even with the race's one caution and subsequent restart, nobody was going to get close. In the end, Jessy Willard did a fine job and took second. John Allen was third, Johnny Bone Jr. fourth and Ryan Whitworth fifth.

So ends the latest "Whitey" story. There are those who love the guy, and those who root for anyone else. Either way, you've gotta admit it; the kid's got talent.
