Colby Williams finished first and second in his two USRA Limited Mod qualifying heat races.

Texas short track master Dalton Faulkner and regional oval icon Chase Hatton each swept both rounds of their respective qualifying races, as officials kicked off the 19th Annual Cajun Classic and Billy Melton Memorial on Friday evening at the Genuine RV Ark-La-Tex Speedway.

With a whopping 74 entries on hand going after a spot in Saturday night's $5,000-to-win main event, two rounds of seven Sunoco USRA Factory Stock heat races were contested.

Faulkner set a blistering pace in his two heats, going from eighth to third on the opening lap of his first contest. Other heat winners in the first set of Sunoco USRA Factory Stock included Shawn Graham, John Parker Jr., Michael Hail, Ross Cook, Bobby Jordan and Scotty Case.

Winners in the second set included Faulkner, J.P. Powers, Dustin Durham, Mark Underwood Jr., Brandon Brown, Chad Callender and Bubba Jones.

The top eight in passing points were locked into Saturday's main event, so drivers were getting everything they could in a short time.

USRA Limited Mod action was intense on Friday evening, as well. Ageless veteran Ricky Ingalls kicked off round one action with a feat win, while Andrew Rossum, Ben Leedy and Colby Williams also earned wins.

Bailey Turner, Conner Williams, Skeet Amason and Derick Grigsby all won in round two.

With the 19th Annual Cajun Classic running in conjunction with the Billy Melton Memorial, a whopping 167 entries filled the pits on Friday night, led by 74 Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks and 39 USRA Limited Mods. There was no shortage of potential winners lurking within the pit area.

Officials cranked out 34 heats spread among four divisions with very few delays. The yellow flag was seldom waved in round one.

The Cajun Classic is one of the most prestigious short track races each year in Louisiana. Along with iconic events like the King of the Hill and Mike Parker Memorial, the Cajun Classic has put dirt track racing in this state on the map. Its rich history and list of high-profile past winners give big credibility.
