Lucas Oil Speedway champ Middaugh hopes home dirt advantage provides boost at Summit USRA Nationals

The 10th Annual Summit USRA Nationals powered by Chevrolet Performance takes place Oct. 2-7, 2023, at the Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo. Five USRA divisions will be in action including USRA Modifieds, Medieval USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners.

Entries from all over the country have been pouring in for the event at the "Diamond of Dirt Tracks" for a third straight year.

The Summit Shootout also returns this year and will take place during the Tuesday and Wednesday night programs. The all-star event features Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series track champions and Summit Shootout qualifying race winners to compete in this one-of-a-kind battle for bragging rights and big money.

It’s already been a dream season for Ryan Middaugh, with track championships at Callaway Raceway in his hometown of Fulton and Lucas Oil Speedway. He has 18 feature wins and 33 top-five finishes in 41 events.

“We had a good year in 2017 when we won 14 races. I thought that would be hard to top,” Middaugh said. “To do what we have this year, to win six races at Lucas and a track championship and just to put ourselves in this position has been really cool.”

That position is having a shot at a Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series USRA Modified national championship.

Middaugh enters the five-night Summit USRA Nationals powered by Chevrolet Performance, which kicks off Tuesday night at Lucas Oil Speedway, eight points behind Brandon Davis of Hayfield, Minn., in the USRA points race.

“I don’t really know what it would mean. It would definitely be the pinnacle of what I would say my racing career, which is a racing hobby,” Middaugh said of a potential national championship. “If I could pull something like that off, it would be pretty unbelievable.”

Middaugh calls himself “a true weekly racer” who runs the two tracks closest to home—Lucas and Callaway—and ventures to other locales when they can.

“It’s just me and my dad as the money behind this deal,” Middaugh said. “He works two jobs to hold down the motor program and I kind of take care of the rest. We’re just working-class people. I have one buddy who comes and helps one or two nights a week.

“So just to have a shot at (a national title) means a lot. We’ve had a really good year, winning 18 races, two track championships and we’ve pretty much sealed up the Central Region as well.”

Middaugh, 31, said he’s been preparing for the marathon week of the Summit USRA Nationals by working up an extra set of tires. Otherwise, the preparation has been pretty much as usual. Perhaps looking for the nearest wood to knock on, he’s had few mechanical issues all season.

“We haven’t had any engines troubles and haven’t had any parts failures or DNFs. That’s really helped to keep us up front in the points deal and helps the pocket book too, when you’re running top-five most every night. You can keep putting that money into getting you there next week.”

It’ll take a special week with continued top-five finishes—and perhaps a couple of feature wins—for Middaugh to have a shot at overtaking Brandon Davis. Tyler Davis of Haysville, Kan., also is in the mix just 21 points behind the leader.

Perhaps the home-track advantage will give Middaugh a boost. An already-tremendous season could become one for the ages.
“It’s definitely a different beast,” Middaugh said of the Lucas Oil Speedway dirt. “It changes all the time. It’s a tough place to get ahold of. We’ve built a notebook throughout the year and when the track changes it doesn’t hurt us.

“It would be awesome to even win a prelim night. That would be super cool to top our year off. But we’re gonna go there and try to win every night. If we do that, it would be a big boost toward winning the nationals.”

RULES & PROCEDURES

This event is sanctioned by the USRA and all USRA rules apply. USRA national points awarded each night with 100 bonus points awarded for the event to each driver. Draw for heat line-ups. Passing points each night determine feature lineups. The top 6 each night are locked into Saturday’s A-Main. RACEceivers and transponders required and available for rent or purchase at the track.

The Lucas Oil Speedway has a top-shelf staff, but all safety personnel are there for the safety of the drivers and unable to determine rough driving or other judgement calls. Track officials will be in place at each corner at a minimum to help make calls. The flagman has a black flag and will use it.

The Summit USRA Nationals brings the best tech inspectors in the country. When you leave pre-tech, they will inform you of items, if any, that need to be fixed. If you have questions about any rule(s), stop in the tech barn and ask questions questions? Darlo Mulder will answer his phone most of the time so feel free to call or text him at (515) 835-9946.

The pits will be open to the public all day every day until the pits are cleared at 3 p.m. Monday is reserved for parking and on-track practice from 6-9 p.m. On Tuesday, the pits will be open for parking and practice for any driver that is not qualified for one of the Summit Shootouts. Practice will take place before, during and after the Summit Shootout races. There will be payouts each night.

Wednesday will be the first night of qualifying for Modifieds, Stock Cars and B-Mods with heat races and A-main(s). All drivers will race in an A-main each night on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Each A-main will have up to 30 starters (for instance, if there are 90 cars there will be three A-mains for that class). Up to 15 drivers with the most passing points will draw for starting spots in the A-main for their class, while the remaining cars in passing points will line up behind those starters The top two (2) finishers in each A-main will be locked into Saturday’s A-main for that class, so a total of six (6) or eight (8) cars in each class will be locked into the A-main for Saturday.

After Friday, Modified, Stock Car and B-Mod racers who are not qualified for the A-main will use points earned from their best two nights of racing to line them up for Saturday night’s “alphabet soup” of feature races. Points will be based on your two best nights of racing including heat races and A-main(s), giving drivers that cannot possibly make each night the chance to come later in the week. The Summit Shootout for USRA Hobby Stocks will be on Wednesday with qualifying heats races and A-main(s) on Thursday and Friday. USRA Tuners will join the party on Friday and Saturday.

USRA License Required: Remember, you must have a USRA Competitor License in order to partake in the Summit USRA Nationals. Temp licenses will not be available. Save yourself some time and have that done before the event. Register for your USRA license at usraracing.com/register.

Bonus Points: Each driver in attendance at the Summit USRA Nationals will be awarded 100 bonus USRA national points in their class. Other racetracks may race on this weekend, but they cannot award USRA track, regional and/or national points to Modifieds, Stock Cars, B-Mods, Hobby Stocks and Tuners. From October 2-7, the Summit USRA Nationals at the Lucas Oil speedway is the only way to earn USRA national points.
