Jackson bolts to Bevill Memorial victory

Josh Jackson won the Sunoco USRA Factory Stock main event.

Josh Jackson won the Sunoco USRA Factory Stock main event.

Veteran stock car racer Josh Jackson, versatile driver/chassis builder Justin Whitehead, regional open-wheel stalwart Skeet Amason and Clay Gardner all won features in their respective classes on Friday night as the 67 Speedway in Texarkana, Ark., hosted the Jerrell Bevill Memorial Factory Stock Shootout.

Jackson powered to victory in the 26-lap A-Main for sunoco USRA Factory Stocks, Whitehead prevailed in a talent-filled feature for USRA Modifieds and while Amason outgunned a strong field of USRA Limited Mods while Gardner also scored a feature win.

Jackson, of Morrilton, started fifth on a 19-car grid, drove to the outside of Jimmy Redmond to take command at lap four and pulled steadily away to earn top honors. Hayden Linn powered his way up from 19th to finish second, while Louisiana stalwart Shawn Graham filled out the podium.

Patrick Linn (Little Rock) drove from 17th to fourth, while Thomas Woodruff completed the top five.

Finishing sixth through 10th in the Jerrell Bevill Memorial Sunoco USRA Factory Stock Shootout were Redmond, Jay Watson, Chris Dollarhide, Justin Kilcrease and Neil Kemp. Only one caution slowed the pace for a multi-car melee in turn 4.

Jackson took home a cool $1,000 payday for his efforts.

Whitehead, of Texarkana, started third on an 11-car grid, drove to the inside of Chuck Sanders to take control at lap two and pulled steadily away to earn top honors. Trevor Hughes drove from fourth to claim second while Manuel Williams II came up from fifth at the start to fill out the podium.

Jake Huckaby (Texarkana) and Sanders (Little Rock) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Finishing sixth through 10th were Terrell Chastain, Mike Morris, Manuel Williams Sr., Hudson Horton and Adam Hardin.

Two cautions slowed the pace for quick spins.

Amason, of New Boston, Texas, started on the pole of a 12-car grid and led all 15 laps in convincing fashion. Kenny Turner gave chase throughout yet settled for second while Coty Tupper filled out the podium.

Adam Roy (Hooks, Texas) and Britton Moore (hometown) rounded out the top five. Finishing sixth through 10th were Tim Strickland, Colby Williams, Logan Griffin, Dustin Taylor and Barry Moore.

Three cautions slowed the pace, all for minor incidents. At 66, Amason is one of this division's senior statesmen, yet drives like a man half his age.

The annual Jerrell Bevill Memorial drew an impressive 115 entries spread across five divisions. Led by the popular Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks with 44, there was talent packed into every corner of Tim Crawley's pit area on Friday evening.

Officials knocked out 15 qualifying heats in short order, hosted their B-mains to fill out the field, then proceeded to run five highly-entertaining features.

Crawley is a veteran racer who knows how a show should be run, and has done a fine job at the helm of the 67 Speedway in 2023.
