Stephen Guidry won the USRA Limited Mod main event.

Regional open-wheel stalwart Stephen Guidry and four-cylinder veteran Josh Worn both earned feature wins in their respective divisions, as officials kicked off their ninth annual King of the Hill program on Friday night at Boothill Speedway.

Guidry powered to victory in a talent-filled main event for USRA Limited Mods while Worn was triumphant in a hotly-contested affair for USRA Tuners.

The night was highlighted by two rounds of ten qualifying heats for 104 Sunoco USRA Factory Stock teams.

Passing points were critical as drivers looked to lock themselves into Saturday night's rich $10,000-to-win feature race.

Earning heats wins in round 1 were Dylan Elasko, C.J. Howell, Gary Harvin, Dalton Faulkner, Justin Whitehead, Taten Perkins, Cody Myers, Craig Pursley, Jeff Hammitt and Victor Case.

In round 2, it was Phil Dixon, Colby Mewborn, Nate Dixon, Jason Ingalls, Dakoda Wyatt, Josh Daugherty, Neil Kemp, former King of the Hill winner Kyle Cummings, Dalton Dubois and ageless veteran Ricky Ingalls getting the wins.

Saturday's program will feature C-Mains and B-Mains to set the field for the 50-lap A-Main.

Guidry, of Marksville, started second on a 20-car grid and led all 20 laps, but had to fend off a hard-charging Colby Mewborn (who started eighth) for top honors. Short track master and car builder Shane Hebert filled out the podium, while Conner and Colby Lee Williams (of Sibley) completed the top five.

“This feels absolutely great,” a relieved Guidry told veteran announcer Zach Clark in Victory Lane. “We've struggled here as of late. We changed some things under the car this past winter, and we're finally getting it headed in the right direction.

“My Dad told me at a young age I'd never run anything other than a K-1 numbered car, and I intend to fulfill his wishes. I need to thank my wife and my Mom; without them, we wouldn't be here.”

Guidry earned a cool $750 for his efforts, while tonight's winner will take home a paycheck of $1,500.

Finishing sixth through tenth in the USRA Limited Mod A-Main were Ethan Bailes, Connor Mewborn, Corey Neil Jr., Justin Whitehead (who started 22nd) and Blane Perkins.

Two cautions slowed the pace, both for minor incidents. Guidry's margin of victory was a scant 0.529 of a second.

Worn, of Bossier, started second in a stout 27-car field and led all 12 laps of his feature.

Justin Converse gave chase throughout yet settled for second, while Bryan Guice finished third. Kobe Kulp (Eros) and Ben McDuff (Keithville) completed the top five.

“You couldn't ask for a better track than what we have here tonight,” Worn said. “I can't praise these guys enough. They continue to make this place better for us every time out. We're blessed to have it.”

Finishing sixth through tenth in the USRA Tuners feature were Zach Thorpe, Ashley Kulp (started 20th), Austin Marshall, Michael Taylor (started 25th) and Jackson Mourad (started 24th).

Three cautions slowed the pace for minor spins. This was the biggest field of USRA Tuners here in a long while.

Friday night's preliminary activities drew a whopping 206 entries spread across five divisions, led by Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks seeking that big payday with 104 entries and USRA Limited Mods with 45.

Talent absolutely overflowed the pit area and beyond. Topping the 200 mark in this era is worth noting, and a great sign.

Officials dealt with a couple of electrical issues that delayed the program, yet still managed to crank out 32 heat races and three features in a reasonable time frame. Drivers responded by staying off each other (for the most part) so the program could stay moving along and not extend until sunrise on Saturday.
