Smith shines in Roy Memorial

Cody Smith won the USRA Limited Mod main event.

Cody Smith won the USRA Limited Mod main event.

North Texas short track master Cody Smith, regional Modified stalwart Chris Henigan and versatile driver Justin Whitehead all won features in their respective divisions as the 67 Speedway of Texarkana hosted the inaugural Alan Roy Memorial on Friday.

Smith recovered from an early spin and drove his way to a $3,535 payday in the headlining 25-lap tilt for USRA Limited Mod, Henigan claimed a talent-filled affair for USRA Modifieds and Whitehead was triumphant in the Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks, along with finishing second in the USRA Limited Mods and USRA Modifieds.

Justin Converse (USRA Tuners) was also a feature winner on beautiful night for racing in Arkansas.

Smith, of Kaufman, Texas, started third on a 19-car grid and promptly got tagged and spun by Zane Goff before a single lap was recorded. Undaunted, Smith marched from dead last and drove to the inside of Connor Mewborn to take control at lap 16 and pulled away to earn his 27th win of 2023.

Whitehead, doing triple duty, drove up from 11th at the start to claim second, while Louisiana standout Shane Hebert filled out the podium.

Connor Mewborn (Texarkana) and Derick Grigsby (Marshall, Texas) completed the top five.

“I was just taking it easy there at the start,” Smith told veteran announcer Zach Clark in victory lane. “But somebody got into me, and finished me off. When I went to the back, I was just trying to be cautious. I figured there might be a few wrecks.

“The seas parted every time, I picked the right lane and we moved up through pretty good. I battled with Skeet (Amason) a long time; I finally got by him and the caution came out. I didn't think I'd ever get up there, everybody was pretty evenly matched once you got closer to the front. It was awesome.”

Finishing sixth through tenth were Conner Williams, Skeet Amason, Barry Moore, Coty Tupper and Tracy Denby Jr.

Three cautions slowed the pace, all for minor incidents.

Henigan, of Marshall, Texas, started seventh on a 23-car grid, drove to the inside of Kenny Gaddis to take control at lap seven and held off a hard-charging Justin Whitehead for top honors.

Whitehead gave it all he had yet settled for second while Jake Huckaby (Texarkana) filled out the podium.

Drake Findley (Bryant) and Sean Gaddis (Diana, Texas) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

“I saw Justin up there on the outside with two to go, and I knew I had to go,” Henigan said. “I was trying to be patient with the lapped cars, and he snuck up on me, for sure. This new car has been great, Cade and those guys at CDR are super helpful. We've got it where we want it right now.”

Finishing sixth through tenth were Lynnse Provence, Manuel Williams II, Super Late Model standout Jon Mitchell, Dustin Henigan and Tyson Keeney.

One caution slowed the pace at lap five for Tanner Barnhart who had rolled to a stop on the backstretch.

Whitehead, of Texarkana, started 11th in the 18-car Sunoco USRA Factory Stock field. The cagey chassis builder and savvy racer blasted around the outside of T.J. Evans coming off turn 4 with the white flag waving and went on to record his eighth win of 2023.

Evans settled for second while Gary Harvin was third. Neil Kemp (Mineral Springs) drove up from 16th to claim fourth, while Jeff Hammitt (Edgewood, Texas) rounded out the top five in a fast-paced, caution-free feature.

“That was a super good time,” Whitehead said. “I've always enjoyed lapped traffic. I've had both ends of it; it's screwed me up and it's helped me, as well. That's two weeks in a row I feel like it's helped me.

I had a really good car. I was worried I wasn't going to be able to get around him on the bottom, so I just moved to the top and then he slid across me and I thought that was it. That was a heck of a race.”

Finishing sixth through tenth were Austin Turner, Remington Budd, Arlen Stewart, Bobby Jordan—who started 17th—and young Raysen Roy.

The inaugural Alan Roy Memorial drew a respectable 86 entries across four divisions, led by the mighty USRA Limited Mods going after $3,535 with 33 entries on hand.

There was no shortage of talent in Tim Crawley's pit area. Fans were treated to two- and three-wide action all evening.

Officials cranked out a dozen qualifying heats and a pair of B-mains to set the fields, took a short break, and then proceeded to host four entertaining A-mains.

While weather conditions have been difficult at best for much of the season, the program went off without a hitch on a night when it really counted.
