Fett fends off Jackson, gets $10,000 richer in Mason City
Colby Fett won the USRA B-Mod main event.
Colby Fett crossed the finish first at the end of 50 laps on Thursday to secure a $10,000 paycheck and a victory in the USRA B-Mod Shootout presented by Window World at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway.
Wednesday's show featured ten inverted and mixed double heat races for the B-Mods with passing points setting the lineups for Thursday's finale.
Along with Dan Hovden, Fett garnered the most passing points Wednesday and started on the pole of Thursday's Dash next to Hovden who captured three USRA B-Mod Iron Man Challenge Series crowns from 2017-2020. Hovden won the Dash which gave him the pole for the main event while Fett dropped to fourth and started the 50-lap finale from the outside of the second row.
Hovden, of Decorah, ran away from the field over the first half of the race, leading the first 26 laps uncontested and hunting his seventh USRA B-Mod win of the 2023 season.
Fett, meanwhile, methodically worked his way forward and brought eighth-starting Brayton Carter with him as they narrowed the gap between themselves and the leader with lapped traffic making things interesting.
Hovden ran out of patience and finally moved to the high side to get around a back-marker, and Fett used that move to take over the short way around the North Iowa Action Track and grab the lead with 27 laps in the books.
About the same time, multi-time USRA B-Mod National Champion Kris Jackson found his way into the third spot after moving up from the ninth starting spot, but a big gap ahead laid between Jackson and Hovden while Fett enjoyed a ten-car-length cushion.
Hovden returned to the low side of the racing surface but the top side was more to Jackson's liking and he used that to take over second place with ten laps to go just moments before the race's first and only caution appeared to bunch the field for a five-lap sprint to the finish.
With Fett remaining faithful to the low line, Jackson used the high side to edge in front of Fett and was scored the leader on lap 47 as the pair crossed beneath the flagstand side by side.
They stayed like that until the final turn when Fett used his straight-away speed to slide up for the first time all night and block Jackson's advance. Jackson, however, cranked the steering wheel left and blasted underneath Fett as they drag-raced to the finish line with Fett getting the win by the length of his bumper.
Jackson, who has likely won more high-profile USRA B-Mod shows than any other competitor in the class, was forced to settle for the runner-up paycheck on Thursday night.
Advertised as $7,500 to win, most drivers took the Big Fish Challenge and paid the $50 entry fee to race for a $10,000 top prize. Most racers took the challenge, including Fett, who recorded the biggest USRA
B-Mod win of his career.
Behind Jackson, Carter held on for the third spot while Hovden ended his slide back in fourth. Defending USRA B-Mod National Champion Joe Chisholm finished fifth with Kyle Slader, Ben Moudry, Shadren Turner, Logan Anderson Chris Theodore rounding out the top ten.
In the special race for non-qualifiers, Garner's Josh Appel garnered the checkered flag with Josh Roney finishing second. George Nordman, Matt Avila and Duke Erickson were third, fourth and fifth, respectively.
Other winners on the night were Paul Conrad (USRA Stock Cars), Chris Hovden (USRA Hobby Stocks) and Devin Jones (USRA Tuners).
This Sunday, June 11, the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway hosts Farmers Night presented by Kruger Seeds by Aaron Benson featuring USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars, USRA B-Mods, USRA Hobby Stocks, USRA Tuners and Outlaw Mini-Mods.
