Fett, Hovden best in B-Mod Shootout qualifying; Jackson wins prelim

Kris Jackson won the USRA B-Mod preliminary main event.

Kris Jackson won the USRA B-Mod preliminary main event.

The gates swung open Wednesday night for the first night of the USRA B-Mod Shootout presented by Window World at the Pritchard Family Auto Stores Mason City Motor Speedway with drivers battling for the chance at a $10,000 payday at the end of Thursday night's main event.

Wednesday's show featured 10 inverted and mixed double heat races for the B-Mods with ranked 1st through 10th in passing points getting locked into Thursday's Dash while those 11th through 30th in passing points were locked into the preliminary A-Main Wednesday night.

The top two finishers in Wednesday's prelim also earned a guaranteed spot in Thursday's Dash, and those spots are going to former USRA B-Mod National Champion Kris Jackson of Lebanon, Mo., and second place finisher Hunter Kennedy of St. Ansgar, Iowa. They earned $300 and $200, respectively for their efforts but both drivers turned down the cash for the right to start 11th and 12th in the Dash on Thursday.

Tenth-starting Logan Anderson of Eddyville crossed the finish line third—one spot short of a guaranteed spot in Thursday's 50-lapper. Four-time USMTS National Champion Jason Hughes of Watts, Okla., held off 14th-starting George Nordman of Mason City for fourth.

Garnering the most passing points Wednesday were Colby Fett of Algona and Dan Hovden of Decorah, and that pair will make up the front row on Thursday for the Dash which makes up the firsts six rows of the championship feature.

Along with Fett and Hovden, the other eight competitors earning a spot in Thursday's Dash are Joe Chisholm, Gabe Hodges, Chris Theodore, Kyle Slader, Ben Moudry, Carter VanDenBerg, Brayton Carter Steven Bowers Jr. The 11th and 12th starting spots were locked up in tonight's preliminary feature by Jackson and Kennedy.

Action continues Thursday at the North Iowa Action Track in Mason City. Along with the B-Mods, action Thursday will also feature Medieval USRA Stock Cars, USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners. Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points are awarded in all classes both nights.

B-Mods will be racing for $7,500 to win and $675 to start Thursday's 50-lap championship feature, but drivers who think they can rule the pond, paid a $50 entry fee and signed up for the Big Fish Challenge will be racing for $10,000 to win.

The pits open at 4 p.m., grandstands open at 5, draw closes at 6:30, the driver's meeting commences at 6:40 and racing gets underway at 7 both days. Online tickets are available masoncitymotorspeedway.com/tickets.

The Mason City Motor Speedway is a 1/3-mile clay oval located 5.1 miles east of I-35 at exit 194 on SR 122 (at the North Iowa Fairgrounds). For more information, call (515) 832-6000 or check out MasonCityMotorSpeedway.com. You can also follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
