Rodney Sanders won the USRA Modified main event.

The Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian, La., kicked off a wild weekend of racing Friday with the first night of the 17th annual Doug Murphrey Memorial presented by RacinDirt featuring the American Racer USRA Modified Series powered by Day Motor Sports.

Tyler Townsend led the first three laps of the USRA Modified feature with a heap of pressure from Chase Allen to his inside, but the battle was short-lived as ARMS points leader Sean Gaddis stopped on the racing surface to force the race’s first caution.

The race restarted without Gaddis in the lineup as Townsend led Allen, Colton Horner, Rodney Sanders and Jason Hughes back to green flag racing.

Using the high side, Horner flashed past Townsend to lead the fourth lap. Meanwhile, Sanders clawed his way by Townsend and into the runner-up spot with ten laps complete.

Working the lower and middle parts of the high-banked red clay oval, Sanders snuck into the lead on lap 14. He would not be challenged the rest of the way and beat Hughes to the finish line by 1.757 seconds.

Lapped traffic allowed Hughes to narrow the gap in the closing laps, but It was Sanders streaking to his second American Racer USRA Modified Series victory of the season, and a $5,000 payday for his efforts.

Townsend held off Horner for third while Allen snagged the final spot in the top five. Jake Gallardo, Justin Whitehead, 14th-starting Chris Henigan, Tanner Barnhart and former ARMS champ Triston Dycus completed the top ten.

Chase Wascom was the night's Hard Charger Award winner, picking up an extra $100 from Dickson Transport, LLC.

Three more divisions in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series were in competition, including USRA Limited Mods which saw Colby Williams take the win over Aaron Roy. Colby Mewborn, Barry Moore and Conner Williams completed the top five.

Taking the checkers in the Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks was Corey Neil Jr. while Victor Case settled for runner-up honors in the feature race. Joshua Worn, Scotty Case and Bo Perry filled the remainder of the top five finishing positions.

USRA Tuner national points leader Justin Converse cruised to his seventh main event victory of 2023. Luke Dupont, Robert Sumrell, Maddison Gaddis and Cade Badiali claimed the second, third, fourth and fifth place paychecks.

Action resumes Saturday at the Ark-La-Tex Speedway with another $5,000-to-win main event on tap for the USRA Modifieds. The pits open at 3 p.m., grandstands open at 4 and the green flag waves at 7.

Joining the lineup once again will be USRA Limited Mods, Sunoco USRA Factory Stocks and USRA Tuners, along with Crate Racin’ USA Street Stocks and Pro-Mods.
