Hawks wallops 360 Sprint field at Scotland County Raceway
by Justin Zoch
MEMPHIS, Mo. (June 13, 2001) - Bobby Hawks flew into and around the Scotland County Raceway on a sultry Wednesday evening in Memphis, MO to pocket the victory in the second Wednesday night sprint race held at the facility this season. The win was worth $600 as Hawks prevailed over 21 other sprinters from IA, MO, and IL.
The initial start was halted when Doran Doty went for a wild series of flips down the frontstretch and finally landed upright in turn 1. The accident also collected Mitchell Alexander and Brian Hetrick. Doty went to the hospital following the races for chest trauma due to the force of the accident, but is expected to make a full recovery.
On the restart, it was Knoxville 410 sprint point leader Terry McCarl who took the lead from the pole position and looked to be setting sail when brake failure caused his black #24 to jump over the banking in turn 4, handing the lead over to fellow front row starter Ryan Jamison in the #51J.
However, after a few laps of side-by-side dueling, Hawks slipped by and took the lead from Jamison. Hawks would extend his lead throughout the rest of the feature and took the victory. McCarl picked off Jamison for runner-up honors, and 9th starting Tim St. Arnold and Jeff Nehring rounded out the top 5. The qualifying heat races were won by Hawks, Jesse Hockett, and Jamison.
The next sprint race at the Scotland County Raceway will take place on Thursday July 5th and will be sanctioned by the Winged Outlaws Warriors (WOW) 360 sprint group from Missouri. The Scotland County Raceway will continue to run a Saturday night stock car program featuring Late Models, Modifieds, B-mods, Hobbies, and Cruisers.
