SPRING VALLEY Minn. – On slightly cool April night at the Deer Creek Speedway, 130 cars showed up to race. With full starting fields in both classes competing in the American Racer USRA Weekly Racing Series, the fans were treated to a great night of racing action.

Jeremy Smith jumped out to the early lead in the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods with Mike Kelly in second while a tight pack for third through eighth followed them around the speedway.

With three completed, Jason Schlangen and Bob Bunne were tight for third as Kelly bounced off the turn two wall. A restart with five to go saw Smith leading as Colter Deutsch moved into second. Deutsch pressured low and pulled alongside a couple times early on.

Late in the race, Tyler Groenedyk worked into the top five and, after a lengthy period of cautions, made a move on the last lap to take the second spot away from Bunne. At the finish it was Smith, Groenedyk, Deutsch, Bunne and Brandon Hare in the top five.

Jason Cummins jumped out front at the drop of the green flag in the USRA RHS Modified main event and was never challenged.

Jay Ihrke and Steve Wetzstein battled for second early on. Wetzstein took second as Mike Sorensen moved up to race with Ihrke for third with Don Gerritsen Jr. in fifth. Gerritsen and Sorensen swapped the fourth spot back and forth until Sorensen took control of it.

On a restart with six completed, Sorensen and Bob Timm split Ihrke as they raced side by side for third. Sorensen took third and started to gain ground on Wetzstein in second. Sorensen and Wetzstein battled for second for the next five laps with Wetzstein eventually regaining control of the spot.

Cummins took home the last checkered flag for the evening followed by Wetzstein, Sorensen, Timm and Ihrke.

Next week racing action resumes at 5 p.m.
