Link, Johnson, Hovden win at Cresco Speedway’s Fair race
Chris Hovden won the USRA Hobby Stock main event.
With a limited schedule in 2022, Cresco Speedway (Iowa) held its annual Howard County Fair races Thursday night as three USRA drivers navigated their way to Victory Lane in front of an at-capacity crowd!
Although there were only eight USRA Stock Cars in the pits due to many area drivers participating in the USRA Summer Shootout race at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, the cars in attendance put on a show for the ages as Brady Link of Waukon earned his first win of the 2022 season.
Link led the 18-lap feature race early, but faced heavy pressure from fellow front row starter Kevin Donlan of Decorah and Brayden Gjere of Mabel, Minn.
Midway through the race, Donlan was able to get past Link and gain a multi-car lead as Link fell back to as far as fourth place. With Gjere gunning for the top spot, he brought out a caution with only a handful of laps left to reset the field. The caution gave Link a second chance at the lead as he raced side-by-side with Donlan for the final three laps, ultimately gaining the advantage on the final circuit around the 4/10-mile speedway.
Donlan held onto second, while Gjere drove his way back up to third. Dylan Suhr of Waterloo took fourth, while Cresco’s own Andy Stinson was fifth.
In the USRA B-Mod main event, Michael Johnson of Rose Creek, Minn., got the win in his debut at the northeast Iowa speedway. Johnson ran second for much of the feature, but worked his way around Cresco’s Jason Schlangen with less than five laps to go.
Schlangen held on for second, while another crowd favorite - Brandon Hare of Elma - claimed third. In fourth was Decorah’s Phillip Ihde, while Jett Sorensen of Rochester, Minn. rounded out the top five.
In the USRA Hobby Stock feature race, a fierce battle between Chris Hovden of Cresco and Josh Ludeking of Decorah had the crowd on their feet all race long. Hovden was able to pass Ludeking with three laps remaining, dropping Ludeking to the runner-up spot.
In third was Cresco’s Scott Spilde, while another Cresco driver, Steve Holthaus, gave the home crowd plenty to cheer about with his fourth place finish. Rounding out the top five was Decorah’s Paul Seabrooke.
