Mullens, Anderson, Turner top Lakeside Speedway opener

Tanner Mullens won the USRA Modified main event.

Tanner Mullens won the USRA Modified main event.

On Friday, April 22, Lakeside Speedway made huge statement.

Over the winter local racer Darren Bennett was asked by the Marrs family to be the new General Manager of the speedway. Bennett and staff hit the ground running, setting up a staff and making plans for the 2022 season.

Friday night showed that his hard work paid off as 107 cars checked in and a huge crowd returned to Lakeside to take in the show consisting of USRA Modifieds, USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods plus Pure Stocks and E-Mods.

The USRA B-Mods had a stacked field for their A-Main. With 29 B-Mods checking in the track was given extra money to bring the winners pay up to $1,000.

At the drop of the green Tim Powell, Cory Janasek. Terry Schultz and Shadren Turner battled for the top spot. Turner was able to work his way to the front only to be slowed by a mid-race caution for Patrick Royalty who was working his way towards the leaders when his night was cut short by an errant driveshaft.

Turner brought his J2 Chassis to the Rod End Supply Victory Lane for his second win of the 2022 season. The hard charger of the night went to Jesse Mulich as he had to transfer to the feature trough the B-Main and moved up 15 spots to come home fourth.

The top five were Turner, Schultz, Powell, Mulich and Mark Shafman. Heat race winners were Royalty, Danny Charles, Janasek and Kyle Henning. The B-Main went to Mulich.

The USRA Stock Cars came out for their feature and Tim Shields threw down the gauntlet to the rest of the field from green to checkered only to be slowed by three yellows flags throughout the A-Main, but post-race inspection discovered a carburetor infraction and the win would go to second-place finisher Kevin Anderson.

The hard charger went to Jaylen Wettengel as he moved up 15 spots to come home in second. The top 5 were Anderson, Wettengel, Doug Keller, Kameron Hanes and Tommy Ground. The heat race winners were Shields, Chad Walker, Ground and Anderson. The B-Main was won by Brian Johnson.

The USRA Modifieds were the next class to hit the speedway for their 20-lap A-Main with a stacked field with the likes of Darron Fuqua, Austin Siebert, Tanner Mullens, Nic Bidinger and a host of other top modified aces. The feature saw Wichita driver Mullens start on the front row with Randal Shiffelbein.

Mullens took the green and jumped to the lead and never looked back, only to be slowed by two cautions. The show was behind him as Perry’s Nic Bidinger moved up 13 spots after some heat race bad luck to come home second. The top five were Mullens, Bidinger, Seibert, Fuqua and Tyler Hibner. Heat race winners were Shiffelbein, Hibner and Seibert.

We closed out a great season-opening night with five feature winners and look forward to week 2 this Friday, April 29, for CARB Night with the Grand National class hitting the track for their first appearance this year. The Lakeside GM would like to thank all the racers and fans that came out to make opening night a huge success and hope to see everyone this Friday.
