Sorensen fends off Wetzstein for victory at Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - Wet track conditions forced the cancellations of this week's Pepsi Slingshot races due to the earlier 2:00 start time. Hence, the track crew was able to spend their getting the big Deer Creek Speedway prepared for racing action. It wasn't an easy battle, but after a ton of work a very good, heavy racetrack was ready.
Announced at the pit meeting tonight was that a new bonus was being added to the EZ Fabricating USRA Modified class. The Chimney Sweep award for the modified driver who wins his heat and the feature event that night. The driver will receive a $100 bonus making it possible for a driver to take home $1,000 for a feature win at the speedway if qualified through the normal $800 to win event, the $100 sweep bonus and the $100 Travel Plaza sticker program.
Nate Wasmund and Todd Scharkey paced the field with Wasmund taking the lead early on. Steve Wetzstein and Mike Sorensen were side by side for third. Wasmund continued up front running the middle of the track while Sorensen tried to work past Scharkey by running higher and Wetzstein tried the same thing running lower than the leaders.
With five completed Scharkey got a little loose with Sorensen moving low to miss him, clipping Jay Ihrke who was in fifth bringing out a caution. On the restart Wasmund continued to lead Sorensen moved into second. With eighteen to go Sorensen and Wasmund crossed the line side by side with Sorensen slowly taking the lead. Four laps later Wetzstein and Wasmund now raced for second. Wetzstein took second while Ryan Gustin was flying up high.
Gustin worked into the top five and soon claimed the third spot but shorlty thereafter brought out the caution for a flat tire. On the restart Sorensen again led the field but Wetzstein was working the low side well. The two crossed the line close with three to go but Sorensen was hooked up on the high side and held on for the win, Wetzstein second, Bob Timm came home third with Dan Bohr working up from eleventh to take home fourth followed by Alan Mondus in fifth.
Racing action resumes next week with racing at 5 p.m.
