Iron Man “Road to Independence” paved with gold

The season’s richest week of dirt track racing for the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge built by Medieval Chassis takes place over five nights this week with the “Road to Independence” for American Racer USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods winding through Iowa.

It all kicks off Tuesday and Wednesday at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City with the Great American Stock Car Shootout. The party moves to the sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge on Thursday, and then Friday finds the Iron Man brigade at the Fayette County Speedway in West Union before wrapping up Saturday night at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah.

Tuesday Takeoff: At the Hamilton County Speedway’s Great American Stock Car Shootout, one Stock Car racer could walk away with more than $3,150 in cash and awards while B-Mod pilots battle for as much as $2,300 to win. Hobby Stock chauffeurs are shooting for as much as $1,500 for their efforts.

Every racer will have the chance to pocket some serious cash and every racer will be part of the King of the Hill race. All drivers in all three classes (Stock Cars, B-Mods and Hobby Stocks) will run two heat races from two different starting spots on Tuesday.

Passing points will be used and the top 12 drivers will be locked into a Dash for Cash to determine the lineup for the first six rows of the Wednesday night's main events. The remainder go to Last Chance Races on Wednesday.

Tuesday will feature the “King of the Hill” match races where racers in each class are eligible to compete in a head-to-head winner-take-all competition. Wednesday will feature Last Chance Races and Championship Races in all three classes.

Full Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series national points and Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge points awarded Wednesday only. All drivers in attendance Tuesday get 75 show up points.

Opening in July 1910, the Hamilton County Speedway is the oldest speedway in the state of Iowa. In 1938, work began on the current location at the Hamilton County Fairgrounds. The semi-banked half-mile dirt track was completed in the spring of 1939, and the first races were held on the track in September of that year.

The Hamilton County Speedway is located off US 20 at exit 140, then 1.2 miles north, then 0.5 mile east on Bank St., then 0.4 mile south on Bluff St. (1200 Bluff St, Webster City, IA 50595).

Thriller Thursday: A special Thursday night event for the Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge takes place at the Sports Park Raceway in Fort Dodge where freshman promoter Andy Jones has spearheaded a great first season at the former Frontier Sports Park and Mineral City Speedway.

The track was destined to have the doors closed for 2020 until Andy Jones and his staff came on board to resurrect the facility. Despite navigating through a complete renovation of the racing surface and the COVID-19 pandemic, family fun entertainment and fantastic racing is the new normal in Fort Dodge.

In addition to Stock Cars and B-Mods this Thursday, Hobby Stocks and Tuners will also be on the card. Gates open at 5 p.m. with hot laps at 7 and racing at 7:30.

The Sports Park Raceway is a semi-banked half-mile clay oval located 0.9 mile north of US 20 on US 169, then 0.5 mile east on 230th. (2298 S River Rd, Fort Dodge, IA 50501).

Fast Friday: Sponsored by Brown's Sales & Leasing, Friday's show at the Fayette County Speedway will also feature Mensink Racing Products USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners plus Mod-Lites with hot laps at 7 p.m. and racing to follow.

The Fayette County Speedway is one of the oldest, continuously running weekly racetracks in Iowa. In the 1930s, the Fayette County Fairgrounds was a horse racing track that circled just about the entire fairgrounds. In 1991, promoter Jerry Blue built the 3/8-mile track that is raced on today.

The track is now operated by the Fayette County Ag Society’s Race Committee. Their goal is to provide the best racing show possible with 50/50 ticket proceeds going back into facility improvements including new women’s restrooms, updating of the concession stand and the new grandstand walkway. Come see what legendary Iowa driver Gary Webb calls one of Iowa’s best kept secrets in racing.

The track is a semi-banked 3/8-mile clay oval located 0.9 mile south of US 18 on SR 150, then 0.1 mile east on SR 56 (372 Fair St, West Union, IA 52175).

Spectacular Saturday: The annual Fourth of July event at the Upper Iowa Speedway in Decorah is always a fan favorite and one that somehow makes incredible memories year after year.

In addition to the Stock Cars and B-Mods, this year’s event sponsored by Weis Buick will also showcase the Hobby Stocks, Tuners and Mod-Lites with racing at 6:30 p.m.

Situated at the Winneshiek County Fairgrounds, the track is a semi-banked 1/4-mile clay oval located 1.8 miles east of US 52 on SR 9, then 1.0 mile northwest on Montgomery St., then northeast on E. Main St. (900 East Main St, Decorah, IA 52101).

The Iron Man Story: Launched in 2010 as a series for Stock Cars, the USRA B-Mod division was added to the Iron Man lineup in 2011. Between the two classes, 14 different champions have emerged from 19 title chases.

After taking the title in 2017, Derek Green of Granada, Minn., grabbed his second Iron Man title for the Stock Cars in 2019. Other past champions include Dillon Anderson (2018), Kyle Falck (2016), Tom Schmitt (2012 and 2015), Mitch Hovden (2013 and 2014), Mike Van Genderen (2011) and Nathan Wood (2010).

All Christie Door Company Iron Man Challenge events also award national points in the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series.
