Deer Creek banquet draws huge crowd
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Deer Creek Speedway presented its annual banquet with approximately 325 people on hand to enjoy the night's activities. Another great evening of food provided by Grumpy’s in Grand Meadow started off the evening's activities. After the dinner, the Queensland family put together another great night of presentations and awards for the drivers and fans of the speedway.
The presentations started off with a highlight of the PRCA Rodeo held at the speedway showing the young fans doing Mutton Busting along with other rodeo activities.
Randy Queensland then addressed the crowd gathered and thanked everyone involved at the speedway for their help and support. Sponsors were recognized because without them nothing could be done at the level it has been. The employees and fans were thanked along with the drivers who support the track every week. With the return of special events on the major dates it was also announced that in 2007 the Featherlite Fall Jamboree will be held on 5th through the 8th of September which is two weeks before the current date and also 1 week before the WISSOTA 100’s.
Next up was a slide show presentation of the fans and employees of Deer Creek Speedway highlighting them working and enjoying the racing activities. The SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Street Stocks received their accolades first with a slide show and the 2nd through 10th place point finishers coming up to receive their trophies and monies from the racing season. The Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, SunPlace Tanning WISSOTA Super Stocks, Bigelow Homes USRA Modfifieds and the Kramer Motorsports WISSOTA Late Models all came up to receive their awards along with slide shows highlighting the years racing action.
Finally the class champions in each class came to the front with Jim Gustafson taking home the honors in the WISSOTA Street Stocks with 1 finish outside the top 5 all season. Kenny Wytaske in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds with 3 wins. Dustin Nelson with his second consecutive WISSOTA Super Stock Championship with 3 wins. Mike Sorensen receiving his third championship in five years along with his son Dustin who received his own trophy and jacket for being crew chief. Adam Hensel took his ovation as the track champion and the National WISSOTA Late Model Championship with 5 wins this season at Deer Creek.
Other awards that were given out: Doug Herrick – Most Improved WISSOTA Late Model driver, Hank Rollinger Jr. – Most Improved USRA Modified, Ryan Siegle – Most Improved WISSOTA Super Stock, Jerry Young – Most Improved WISSOTA Midwest Modified, Chuck Nerland – Most Improved WISSOTA Street Stock.
Jay Ihrke – Rookie of the year who moved up to the WISSOTA Late Model ranks, Hard Luck Award went to Lucas Peterson who raced in the WISSOTA Super Stock ranks most of the season before finishing out the year in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds after destroying his Super. Sportsmanship award of the year – Went to Steve Arpin.
The final event of the night was Jerry Bloom who announced that after 20 years he was retiring from dirt track racing. Jerry thanked his family especially his dad Jim who crew chiefed on the car and his son Tony who is now taking over the driving duties of the #35 WISSOTA Late Model.
Tons of gifts and door prizes were handed out throughout the nights activities to fans and drivers as sponsors again stepped up with some great contingency gifts.
The last few hours of the night were spent enjoying a few beverages while dancing the night away to Kendall Meyer and Common Ground who performed on stage at the banquet.
Everyone is already looking forward to the 2007 racing season at Deer Creek Speedway where a new resurface job has been completed on the 3/8-mile high-banked clay speedway.
