Schultz protects points lead with win at Central Missouri Speedway
WARRENSBURG, Mo.—The hot muggy weather did not deter loyal race fans and drivers from the fast-paced race action at Central Missouri Speedway on Saturday night for KMMO 102.9 Radio and Scout Night. Race fans have enjoyed some tight racing the last few weekends and Saturday night was no exception.
Terry Schultz from Sedalia racked up his fourth trip to victory lane at CMS with his USRA Modified feature victory.
Twenty-three USRA Modifieds made their way to CMS for competition in three preliminary heat races to set up the starting grid for the 25-lap, $1,000 to-win feature event. Jason Bodenhamer won in convincing fashion in heat one with Matt Johnson and Eddie Bray Jr., trailing. Danny Scrogham won in heat two ahead of Richard Layne and Dalton Kirk while the final heat of the night went to Kevin Blackburn, son of former two-time track champion Gary Blackburn, over two of the USRA hot-shoes, Robbie Reed and Terry Schultz.
USRA Modified drivers filed onto the track competing for their 25-lap main event. Scrogham and Bodenhamer led the field to the green out front when Bodenhamer grabbed the lead on lap four. Meanwhile, Blackburn moved into the second spot and by motoring around Bodenhamer for the lead on lap ten.
Terry Schultz snuck up on the leaders and made his move towards the front using the high and middle lanes of the track to grab the lead from Blackburn. Bodenhamer almost lost his third spot when he did a half spin in turn without coming to a complete stop on lap 13. Several drivers had to quickly take evasive action to try and avoid being involved in a multi-car pileup but were unable to avoid contact. Unfortunately, top-five running Matt Johnson’s night came to an end with all other drivers able to continue.
After another lap 13 restart, drivers settled into a groove as Schultz commanded the front of field. Blackburn tagged the wall coming out of turn four and suffered some right side damage late in the race but soldiered on to finish second behind Schultz, who claimed his fourth CMS feature win of the season. Bodenhamer had his strongest run of the year in third with Tim Karrick moving up from twelfth into a fourth place finish while Robbie Reed rounded out the top-five.
Next Saturday, August 15, the B-Mods take the spotlight with a $1,500 to-win track special event. Weekly racing continues in the USRA Modifieds, Pure Stocks and Street Stocks and the ULMA Late Models roll back into CMS for their second-to-last appearance of the year.
