Danny Hesch captured the 25 lap modified feature Friday night at the Fox Ridge Speedway. Hesch jumped out to the lead from his outside row one starting position.
Troy Langowski followed closely behind as the two drivers separated themselves from the pack early in the race.
The field tightened up when third running Wayne Engen brought out the yellow with a flat tire on lap seven. Points leader Eric Pember had quietly moved in to third and looked to improve his position. Hesch ran off four more laps when the second caution of the event waved for a Bob Timm breakdown. Karl Fenske had closed on the leaders and was fourth on the restart.
Hesch broke away from Langowski, while Pember and Fenske slugged it out for the third spot trading the position several times over the next few laps. Fenske finally took control of the three spot and then set sail on Langowski. Fenske moved into the runner-up spot on lap 18. Fenske was able to close on Hesch in the final laps by running the top groove of the speedway. Hesch's car was strong running the middle groove and he held off Fenske for the victory.
The win was Hesch's first at the track co-owned by his parents, Dave and Judy. Fenske was penalized four positions in the final order for jumping a restart. Pember was awarded second, with Langowski, Bruce Angst, and John Doelle rounding out the top five.
Hesch returned behind the wheel of the racer that he opened the season with, but credited the victory to some seat time in the Fox Ridge house car.
"Driving that spec car really taught me a lot in the last couple of weeks. I learned a lot on how to drive the car real smooth. The car doesn't have the horsepower that the other cars have, so I had to learn how to be smoother so I could keep up with everybody. I couldn't make a mistake with that car or I was going to the back real fast, said Hesch. "Tonight, we put the same set-up on this car that we had on the other one, and it really worked," Hesch said.
Immediately following the win, the driver searched out his father's truck stationed in the infield. "That was the best part of the win, being able to go over to dad's truck, I waited a year and half for that,"said the happy winner.
Troy Brand won his fourth super stock feature of the season. Brand was able to hold off Mark Teske for the final six laps. Brand took advantage of his starting spot in the front row to pick up the win. The Winona driver outgunned Lyle Schlomer and went to his favored high groove setting the pace early in the race.
Schlomer trailed Brand for the first twelve laps before the eighth starting Teske moved into contention. A lap 14 yellow for Bob Bautch drew Teske to Brand's bumper. Brand went right back to the cushion as Teske switched back and forth looking for the proper traction. A lap 18 caution for a slowing Shawn Huse set up the stage for two lap shoot-out. Brand was fast on the top groove and he held off Teske for the win. Jason Johnson and Dennis Earney followed the two leaders across the stripe. Johnson and Earney were later disqualified for wheel base violations shaking up the finish order in the main.
The top five were Brand, Teske, Schlomer, Ben Anderson, and Gary Wiersgalla. The win capped off a long week for Brand.
"We worked 'til midnight, every night this week putting this car back together. The entire right side of this car is new. We had to replace everything right of the driver's seat,"said Brand
.
Brand was involved in a wreck with Schlomer last week that destroyed the passenger side of his racer. "That wreck was the hardest I've ever been hit, I didn't know how bad the car was wrecked until we looked at it the next day." Brand's four wins tops the division at the track this year.
Travis Krause staged off the determined advances of Shaun Wehlage to add to his win total at the track this year in the street stocks. The twelfth starting Krause wasted little time in getting to the front. Krause passed early leader Randy Bradford on lap three.
Wehlage, who beat Krause in their heat, had a little more difficulty negotiating traffic early in the event. Wehlage moved into second on lap six and began pursuit of Krause.
Wehlage closed on Krause by running the top groove, a couple of times he tried the low side, only to lose ground.
Wehlage pulled alongside Krause on lap 13 and attempted a pass charging out of turn two. Krause was up to the task holding Wehlage off. Wehlage then went back to the high groove and chased Krause the final lap, only to fall short at the stripe by a car length.
Bradford was third with Danny Hanson and Brad Dennis rounding out the top five.
Eric Pember picked up his first win of the season in the late model division. Pember led all 20 laps keeping a safe distance between him and runner-up Steve Isenberg. Pember led the first ten laps as Isenberg trailed. A lap ten caution for Tom Nesbitt pulled Isenberg, Scott Cramer, and Bob Timm closer to Pember.
Pember was able to pull away from the field to pick up the win. Isenberg, Cramer, Timm and Mark Teske followed in spots two through five.
News and notes;
The speedway will hold a "monster truck" type show, Saturday, August 17. Pember's win in his late model comes two weeks after he indicated that the car was just a "tick off" from being a feature winner. Isenberg made the long haul from Watertown (S.Dak.) to race Friday. Isenberg finished second in the Wissota Challenge Series race there Thursday. Contrary to rumors and internet speculation, the speedway will continue to hold the late model class. Dave Hesch assured that the speedway will finish out the season with the late model class and that they would not be dropped from the program.
