$5,000-to-win Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl July 4-5

WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Two exciting nights of racing in seven car classes, live music, great food, a re-groomed track, fireworks, solid driver payouts and reasonable fan prices await attendees Friday and Saturday at Central Missouri Speedway for the 9th Annual Tom Wilson Memorial BBQ Bowl.

Weekend racing is highlighted by Saturday’s BBQ Bowl USRA Modified grand finale, a race named for the late Tom Wilson, long-time CMS Announcer and Director of Public Relations. Wilson, along with promoter Earl Walls, brought “big-money” Modified racing to the Greater Kansas City metro in 1998. The event pays a whopping $5,000 to the winner and a $1,000 just for taking the green flag during Saturday night’s 50-lap, 24-car main event!

Past event winners include Justin Boney 1998, Chad Lyle (1999/2000/2001), Richard Layne (2002), Tim Karrick (2003), Jason Hughes (2004/2006), Dean Wille (2005), Kelly Shryock (2007/2011), Jeremy Payne (2008), Terry Phillips (2009), and Dustin Boney (2010).

In May, current track point’s leader Jim Moody captured the first special event of the year by during the track’s Memorial Day special. Moody is expected to defend home turf this weekend along with a solid field of regulars such as National USRA Point’s Leader Terry Schultz, Shad Badder, and Tim Karrick. USRA contender John Allen has also expressed interest in running the event. Allen finished in the runner-up position in the 2011 BBQ Bowl behind Kelly Shryock. Note, mention of driver name does not guarantee race appearance!

Total payouts for the weekend among competing classes exceed $45,000. Action begins on Friday, July 4 with USRA Modifieds qualifying thru heat races and b-main(s) for the inside row for the following night’s $5,000 to win race. The program is highlighted on night one by the Street Stocks competing for $1,500-to-win. Mod Lites and 305 Sprint Cars are also on the docket Friday!

The last time 305 Sprint Cars appeared at CMS was May 29, 2011 when Christi Hoenshell added her name to the track’s storied winner’s list. Local sprint car driver Steven Cross has been diligently working the sprint car ranks to draw interest in this event for 305s. Midwest Speed Shop has stepped up to the plate to offer a contingency for one of the sprint competitors this weekend.

Also in attendance on Friday is the Midwest Mod Lite Racing Series. Mod Lites have not raced at CMS since 2004! One of the Mod Lite winners that year had a familiar name in the Mod Lite ranks, Raffurty. This year, with the help of Jeff Raffurty, Mod Lites make a return visit to the track on two occasions. For additional information visit the series online at www.racemodlites.com. Friday night finishes up with a full-on fireworks extravaganza at the conclusion of the night’s events!

Racing resumes the following night, Saturday, July 5 with USRA Modifieds once again qualifying thru heat races and b-main(s) for the outside row for the night’s $5,000 to win race. B-Modifieds join the action on Saturday night as well as the popular Pure Stock class along with the return of the Grand Nationals, for their second appearance this season. Just a few weeks ago, Tim Shields claimed the first Grand National main event of the year at CMS.

Primitive camping is allowed at CMS; however, there is no dumpsite. Campers are welcome on the track grounds for camping but are reminded to clean up after themselves and be respectful and mindful of other campers and responsible for their actions.
