USMTS readies for Memorial Weekend quadruple-header

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa -- The United States Modified Touring Series will be roaring into the Murray County Speedway this Friday night for the first stop of four this Memorial Weekend. The Murray County Speedway in Slayton, MN will host two USMTS races this season and fans will be treated to some great modified racing. A big field of modifieds is expected for this event with drivers from more than nine states.

The USMTS has already raced sixteen races this season and produced eleven different winners. Tommy Myer from Blooming Prairie, MN has a narrow point lead over Justin Boney, while Kelly Shryock and Jason Hughes have a tight battle for third. Last season the USMTS made one stop to the Murray County Speedway and Minnesota driver Tim Donlinger took home the $2000 paycheck after Tommy Myer had troubles with three laps to go. This race will be the first race of the season in the Gopher State for the USMTS.

After one race in the north region Jason Hughes holds the point lead over Tommy Myer. The north region started with a stop at Canton, IL back in April and Hughes led all twenty-five laps to take the win. This race will feature the USRA Hobby Stocks, USRA Stock Cars, and the USMTS modifieds doing battle on the newly designed 3/8-mile speedway.

USMTS invades Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday: The United States Modified Touring Series is ready to invade the beautiful Deer Creek Speedway this Saturday night for the second stop of the Memorial Weekend for the USMTS. This will be the first of four stops in 2003 for the USMTS at the Deer Creek Speedway, which will also host the 5th Annual Featherlite Fall Jamboree September 18-20.

Tickets for the Jamboree will go on sale this weekend and should be the hottest item in the state after the USMTS and Deer Creek announce what the Jamboree will pay this season. This season Deer Creek Speedway is averaging more than thirty cars each night and this weekend could push the sixty modified mark.

Deer Creek Speedway is located in the modified hotbed and has some of the toughest modifieds in the country week in and week out. USMTS has raced several time this season and is having one of the most competitive seasons yet as already eleven different drivers have picked up wins. Jason Hughes Colcord, OK has won four events, but sits fourth in points after several tough finishes in other races.

Tommy Myer from Blooming Prairie, MN picked up his first win of the season by beating out Mark Noble by inches at the Outlaw Motor Speedway in Muskogee, OK two weeks ago. Noble led the whole race except the final lap when Myer snuck by on the bottom coming out of turn four. This race should be no exception as several drivers looking for their first win of the season will be on hand for this race.

Fans will want to some out and see some great modified racing this weekend as the USMTS will also have stops Friday at the Murray County Speedway in Slayton, Dodge County Speedway in Kasson, and the final stop at the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna, MN on Monday. USMTS at Dodge County Speedway on Sunday: The United States Modified Touring Series will make its first of two appearances to the Dodge County Speedway this Sunday for the third stop of the Memorial Weekend. This race should feature some of America’s top modified drivers doing battle on this 1/3-mile speedway.

The main event on Sunday will pay $2000 to the winner of the forty lap main event. Last season Scott Megonigle came from the rear after being involved in a crash and took the win over several top modified drivers from throughout the USA. Dodge County Speedway has been struggling with Mother Nature this season and has only been able to get one weekly show in so far in 2003. Jay Ihrke local hotshoe picked up the first win and will be one of the drivers trying to take the top spot in the Sun Place Tanning 40 that will invade the speedway this Sunday. Hot laps will get underway at 5:30 pm and racing to follow Sunday evening.

This race saw more than sixty modifieds last season and this season should see all of America’s top modified drivers do battle on this high banked 1/3 mile speedway.

The first visit last season saw Chris Spieker from Massena, IA make his first ever appearance at the speedway and show everyone the fastest way around the track. This will be the third stop of the weekend for the USMTS as a stop in Slayton, MN on Friday, Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday, before making the final stop of the weekend at the Steele County Fairgrounds in Owatonna, MN on Monday. All races will pay $2000 to win the Midwest Motorsports Main Event and by putting together four events may top drivers from all over the USA should be on hand. USMTS roar into Owatonna for final weekend stop: The United States Modified Touring Series will make its final stop of the weekend this Monday afternoon after stopping at Slayton, Spring Valley, and Kasson Friday-Sunday. This race should draw several top modified drivers to the Owatonna area.

This race being promoted by Todd Staley USMTS president and Mick Trier will pay $2000 to the winner. Also running will be the Super Stocks, B-Mods, and Pure Stocks. Super Stocks will pay $500 to win, B-Mods $400 to win, and the Pure Stock/Hobby Stocks $300 to win. Gates will open at 2pm with hot laps slated for 4:30pm and racing to follow.

A very strong list of drivers is expected for this event on the newly designed Owatonna racetrack. Several area drivers have fared well so far this season and Blooming Prairie driver Tommy Myer holds a five-point lead over Justin Boney in the USMTS national points. Tommy Myer picked up his first win of the USMTS season last weekend at the Outl aw Motor Speedway in Muskogee, OK by inching out another Blooming Prairie driver Mark Noble by less than five inches.

So far in 2003 the USMTS has had eleven different winners and will be looking for the twelfth winner at one of these tracks this weekend. The race at Owatonna will be the first race of five to visit the Steele County Fairgrounds in 2003.

Fans will also be able to see the top modified drivers in the grandstand for an autograph session during intermission.
