Timm wins feature in Modifieds & Late Model action
Spring Valley, MN. (June 1, 2002) - A beautiful night of racing greeted the fans at Deer Creek Speedway this week with temperatures in the 80's and a perfectly prepared racetrack. Tonight's action was sponsored by The American Dairy Association and Tesk-Holm Enterprises with the first 1,000 spectators through the gate receiving an ice cream sandwich. Current national point leader in the WISSOTA Street Stocks Jeff Brauer was struck by bad luck tonight as he was exiting turn four during the heat race and the car went straight for the front stretch guardrail. At a 45 degree angle the car plowed into the railing and tipped up on its side like a Joey Chitwood thrill show. The car continued on two wheels before the banking on the front stretch took over and slowly tipped the car on the drivers side door. Brauer's night was ended with this wreck as the car suffered some severe damage and will require extensive work to get back on the track.
The WISSOTA Street Stocks were on the track for their feature first and after a couple laps of packing in some fresh moisture the track was very fast. Steve Goodenough jumped into the early lead followed closely by John Bushman in second. Jim Gustafson moved into third from his tenth starting spot on lap 4 and was gaining on the front runners as a car pulled back onto the track from the pit area and collected the lead cars ending the night for Goodenough and Bushman. On the restart Gustafson took command of the race with Fred Prudaehl running second and Greg Erickson coming up from the seventeenth starting spot to crack the top five. Gustafson continued a strong run up front and Erickson was making his presence known on the top side of the track making a move into the second spot as a caution came out for the stalled car of Shawn Whelage. On the restart Chuck Nerland joined in the battle for second with Erickson and claimed the second spot as Troy Bentz joined in the battle. At the stripe it was Gustafson with his first win at the track this year followed by Nerland and Bentz third.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds were on the track next with Kenny Wytaske and Jeremy Laures pacing the field. Wytaske jumped into the lead as the rest of the pack ran two and three wide for the first couple laps. Jade Anderson gained the advantage for the second spot as Scott Olson, Jerry Young, Chad Herman and Nick Kramer battled hard for the third spot. These four battled for a few laps until a pileup coming out of four gathered up most of the drivers sending Young to the back for incident. The caution came out as Wytaske had pulled into a straight away lead bunching them back up for the restart. Herman pulled up to do battle with Anderson on the restart as Wytaske jumped back into the lead. At the checkers it was Wytaske with his second win of the season first, Herman second and Anderson third.
The WISSOTA Super Stocks were dominated by Bill Clemens tonight from his front row starting spot. Behind Clemens the rest of the pack battled three wide for position as Chris Klinger climbed the front stretch wall and spun on the front stretch collecting the car of Nick Herrick. On the restart Mark Wytaske and Dan Nissalke battled for the second spot as Clemens pulled back into the a good lead. Ben Anderson was flying on the top side of the track and moved into second for a lap until dropping back to the fourth position. At the stripe it was Clemens with his third win of the season and second in a row, Wytaske second and Nissalke third.
The Open Modifieds were up next and the great battles from last week carried over to this Saturday night. Todd Scharkey gained the early advantage from the front row with Tim Donlinger moving into the second spot. Donlinger was charging when he went into one a little too hard and was tapped by Darwyn Karau sending him into the infield. Donlinger jumped the tires and stayed on the gas coming back out in fifth position. Bob Timm was the benefactor of this moving into the second spot running the high line around the track. Jay Ihrke continued a strong run in third as Donlinger and Steve Wetzstein battled for the fourth position as a caution flies. On the restart Donlinger moved below Wetzstein and Ihrke into the third spot and joined into a battle with Timm for second. These two drivers were running the high line and low line of the track and quickly tracked down Scharkey to go three wide into one and two and down the back straight before Scharkey dropped back slightly. Donlinger and Timm continued the battle up front until the top line slowly paid off for Timm and he pulled into a slight lead. At the finish it was Timm taking the checker for the second time this season, Donlinger second and Scharkey third.
Without stopping for winners photos Bob Timm jumped into his WISSOTA Late Model for their feature event. A great field of sixteen Late Models were on hand tonight with Toby Patchen and Jon Chrest pacing the field. With the track blackened up on from top to bottom from the super stocks and modifieds you could tell it was going to be a great feature. In the early laps the cars were hopping around on the rubber laid on the track with some drivers trying high and some low. Toby Patchen took the early lead in the middle of the track with Jeff Patchen running low and Jon Chrest the top line in second. These three drivers stated working the low and middle groove of the track as Timm pulled along side on the top of the track after five laps. Timm pulled along side of Jeff Patchen for the lead two laps later. Patchen kept working the low side of the track and at the three quarter mark of the race the lower side started to pay off. Unfortunately he pulled along side of Timm just as the second caution flew. On the restart Timm dropped to the bottom of the track and stayed in front to win the fifth feature in a row and his second of the night. No other driver has won this year in the Late Model class. Patchen came home second with Brad Waits finishing third.
The Modified Lites were out on the track for the last feature of the night. David Lewison, Rob Cue and Jeff Jech traded the top spot for the first half of the event with Lewison gaining the advantage for most of the event. Just past the halfway point in the event Brian Shaw was making a charge up from the back of the field as Cue started to drop back through the pack. Lewison spun be himself in two sending him to the rear of the field on a restart leaving Shaw and Jech to battle for the win.
