Weather claims features at Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (Aug. 24, 2002) - In preparation for the upcoming month of specials Deer Creek went through some major track work this past week. On Monday the track was tore up to loosen the soil which allows better movement of the moisture throughout the evenings racing. With a USMTS special this next week, the Featherlite/USMTS Fall Jamboree on the 19,20 & 21 and the Fall Festival on the 27& 28 of September they wanted to make sure the racing surface was in the best shape possible. Mother Nature put a dampener on a well laid out plan, after tearing the track up on Monday and letting it sit for a day the rains came. The rains came all week and until early Saturday the workers were not able to get onto the track. With the help of all the drivers on hand the track was quickly worked in and by the normal start time the heat races started. Things looked pretty good during the Midwest Modified heats but the Super Stocks took care of any chance of not having to work the track during the night. The holes started to show up in the first super stock heat and by the end of the second heat they were quite pronounced so the action was halted and the grader came out along with the packing equipment to work the track some more. Again with the help of the drivers the track started to come into shape again and the Open Modifieds and the Late Models came out on the track for their heat races. The track really settled down and their were some good heat races in the other classes, but as the street stocks pulled onto the track the rains came down ending the nights racing action.
The plug was pulled on the evening's activities, with it being announced that the classes who had their heat races completed would run their features on the Friday night of the Fall Festival. Tonight were the last point races for the Late Models and Modifieds so it was Rookie Mark Teske taking home the Late Model title with a 2 point win over Brad Waits. The modified title was won by Bruce Angst.
Next week the feature show will be the United States Modified Touring Series with Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks and Modified Lites. The Late models are off until the fall festival. Two action packed weekends are scheduled to close of the season at Deer Creek Speedway on the 19,20,21 of September with the fourth annual United States Modified Touring Series Fall Jamboree sponsored by Featherlite Trailers. Then the following weekend is the Fall Festival with schedule and classes to be announced soon.
