SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Defending series champion Tom Schmitt of Independence, Iowa, bested a field short on quantity but long on quality Friday as the Iron Man Challenge USRA Stock Cars invaded the Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn.

After drawing the outside of the front row for the 20-lap main event, Schmitt fended off the challenges of Kyle Falck to take the victory. Falck also finished second to Schmitt in last year’s Iron Man points after a tie-breaker decided the title holder.

Pete Solum, who won his first Iron Man trophy on Independence Day at the Upper Iowa Speedway, finished third ahead of Sean Johnson and Lynn Panos.

Two-time defending USRA Stock Car national champ Mitch Hovden was sixth, Shawn Peter was seventh, Jake Ludeking finished eighth, ninth went to Ryan Goergen and Larry Blickenderfer rounded out the top 10 while defending USRA Hobby Stock national champion Dillon Anderson was credited with the 11th spot.

The next Iron Man Challenge event will be Thursday, Aug. 8, at the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo. Both USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods will be part of the program with the USMTS Modifieds.
