Mullens dominates for Heartland Modified Tour win at Lucas Oil Speedway

Tanner Mullens won the USRA Modified main event.

WHEATLAND, Mo. (May 10, 2025)—It was all Tanner Mullens in the headline division Saturday night at Lucas Oil Speedway. The Wichita, Kan., racer led all 30 laps to grab the USRA Modified feature win on the USRA Heartland Modified Tour presented by Real Racing Wheels.

Mullens beat Tyler Davis by nearing four seconds to earn the $2,000 prize during the Pitts Homes and Realty Weekly Racing Series program presented by Vietti Marketing.

A total of 103 cars checked into the pits, including 39 in the USRA Modified class where Mullens was fast all night.

Mullens started on the feature pole after setting fast qualifying time and winning his heat race. He carried that speed right into the main event, leading at every point of the 30-lapper. It was his second HMT win in the last month to go along with a pair of Late Model wins.

"It's been a pretty good month for us. We've been working really hard," Mullens said. "We got this new car down and made some laps, just 10 or 15 in it, and decided we'd better bring it here and race with it, see if it's good or not. It's been pretty good since the drop of the green."

Mullens jumped out to a 1.8-second lead after just five laps with Wyatt Gaggero running in second. By lap eight, Mullens already had caught lapped traffic - and that’s when the first caution flew as Shadren Turner rolled to a stop in turn two. Mullens had a 2.9-second lead at the time.

Two more cautions over the next three laps slowed Mullens’ momentum, but the race then settled into a green-flag rhythm and Mullens was able to build a three-second lead by lap 20, as Gaggero and Tyler Davis battled for second.

Mullens cruised from there as the race remained caution-free. He beat Tyler Davis by 3.8 seconds with Gaggero third, Trevor Hughes fourth and Tad Davis coming home in fifth.

"Just make sure you hit your marks," Mullens said of the final half of the race. "There were a lot of good drivers behind us. If you slip up, they're gonna go by you. I was glad to see the yellows quit coming out and start making laps and get used to this thing."

Davis, of Haysville, Kan., said he was no match for Mullens' strength on the low side of the speedway.

"I rode it pretty hard up there for a long time," Davis said of the high groove. "It was getting pretty hard on the tires, but it was a pretty good run for us. We're getting our car a little better. We've been struggling a little bit lately."

Michehl wins Stock Car make-up feature: Miles Michehl of Fort Dodge, Iowa, led all 20 laps to prevail in the O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars make-up feature to start the program.

Michehl held a 1.3-second lead over McMillin by the halfway point on lap 10. As his margin gradually increased, Christopher Sawyer closed in on McMillin to battle for second and made the pass with five to go.

Michehl went on to beat Sawyer by 1.6 seconds with Zach Zeugin rallying into the third spot.

Schweizer holds on for Stock Car win: In the regularly scheduled O'Reilly Auto Parts USRA Stock Cars feature, Rodney Schweizer of Kansas City, Kan., led all the way to pick up the win.

Schweizer started on the pole and held off a determined challenge throughout from runner-up William Garner. With laps dwindling, Garner closed in on Schweizer again after a lap-13 restart, but Schweizer was up to the challenge and held on by .630 seconds.

"Track position always helps, but we've had a pretty good year," Schweizer said after his fourth win overall in 2025.

Myles Michehl, winner of the make-up feature earlier, was third with Mason Beck fourth and James McMillin, who started 10th, coming home in fifth.

Gillmore wins a thriller in B-Mods: Ryan Gillmore of Springfield won a thriller over Jon Sheets in the Clear Creek Golf Cars USRA B-Mod feature, making the winning pass with one lap remaining.

"We've been working really hard on this thing to try and get it better," Gillmore said of his team and chassis-builder Scotty Allen after his first Lucas Oil Speedway feature win of the season, by .431 seconds over Sheets.

Sheets grabbed the lead on lap two after fellow front-row starter J.C. Morton paced the opening circuit. Sheets had a 1.3-second lead by lap 10 over Gillmore, who had cleared Morton for second.

Gillmore chased down Sheets and was on his back bumper by lap 14 and the two were side by side the next time round. Gillmore kept diving low into turns three and four, but Sheets used momentum from the top to maintain his lead by the narrowest of margins.

Coming to the white flag, Gillmore used the high side and made the decisive pass coming out of turn four. He was able to hang on from there to beat Sheets by two car lengths at the checkers.

"I was good on the bottom before I went to the top, I just kept messing up," Gillmore said. "Once I got to Sheets, I didn't really know how to break it down. I had to disrupt the race so to speak. I threw a slider, after running next to him, maybe trying to surprise him and get him to shift his momentum.

"Everything just kind of played out on my end of the favor. Jon raced me really well. Me and him have had a lot of really good races."

Morton was third with J.C. Newell fourth and Brayden Bennett fifth.

Public Safety Appreciation Night is set for next Saturday, May 17. All police, fire and rescue personnel are admitted free with ID. The USRA B-Mods will headline the racing with a 25-lap, $750-to-win feature. The USRA Modifieds and USRA Stock Cars also will be in action, along with Hickamo Super Stocks. Grandstands and pits open at 4 p.m. with hot laps at 6:30 and opening ceremonies at 7.
