Thrilling pass puts Martin in Valley Victory Lane

Gunner Martin won the USRA Modified main event.

Gunner Martin won the USRA Modified main event.

With just two races remaining on the inaugural season for the USRA Heartland Modified Tour presented by Real Racing Wheels, the fans at the Valley Speedway in Grain Valley, Mo., were treated to a showcase on Friday night.

Slicing in and out of lapped traffic, Tyler Hibner appeared to be on his way to his second series win of the season.

However, the Hochatown Saloon Last Call white flag went to Gunner Martin with a last-lap pass exiting turn two. Martin went to the top and made it stick for his first win with the series, in front of his hometown crowd.

“This is one of the coolest wins ever,” said Gunner Martin. “I've been wanting to get Rick Beebe a win for two years now and we finally got it done," Martin said. "I knew lapped traffic was going to play into it. I waited, and then we got to one to go. He (Hibner) went to the bottom and I just stuck it up there.

"I started racing out here in 2009. I got a lot of laps here. This is very special.”

Behind Martin, Hibner showed an extremely strong performance in the runner-up position. Racing with the tour all the way from Winona, Minn., Keith Foss, rounded out the podium moving forward six spots to third.

Thirty-two cars rolled in for the track's first USRA Modifieds show in eight seasons.

On Saturday, the HMT invades the I-35 Speedway in Winston, Mo., capping the year. Back in June, Hibner won the series first event there. From that time, he has taken ten checkered flags at I-35 Speedway and the points lead.

Tyler Wolff will also be crowned the USRA Heartland Modified Tour champion for 2024.
