Dirks grabs first ever feature win at HCS
BRITT, Iowa (July 19, 2002) - Change. While some people hate it, Jared Dirks of Belmond is soaking it up. After just two outings in his No. 51 IMCA Stock Car, Dirks knows the move up from the IMCA Hobby Stock class was a smart one. Dirks took the pole and held on for the narrow victory over John Campbell of Belmond and veteran driver John Pletcher of Britt. Jeff Dolphin of Forest City and Rob Hughes of Humboldt both traveled in the pack across the finish line in a fight for the second spot, only to finish fourth and fifth. Campbell qualified for the Big Bud Shootout on August 9 after placing first in the Stock Car cash dash. In the IMCA Modified class, Pat Graham of Ames picked up a clean sweep winning his heat, cash dash and feature for his second straight feature win in Britt. Graham slid into the top spot with just four laps remaining going low as Scott Anderson of Mason City went to the high side. Brad Bakken of Garner followed Graham¹s strategy with just two laps remaining to pick up the second place finish. Anderson settled for third after leading 11 laps. Chad Gentz of Forest City held off IMCA Hobby Stock points leader Shane Monson of Clear Lake for his first win at Hancock County Speedway on Friday in an exciting sprint to the finish. Gentz led the pack for the entire race and was challenged by Monson for the final 11 laps. John Madson of Britt finished third. In the Limited 360 Modified class, Jake Simpson of Algona held off Scott Manske of Algona and Shawn Plymesser of Forest City, adding another notch in his victory column. Matt Byrne of Woolstock worked his way through the pack to the top spot in just one lap after starting in the eighth position and held on for a strong lead and the win in the Econo class. Following Byrne across the finish line was Doug Smith of Lake City and Cory Roe of Webster City. Trophies for the fair race were presented by Lisa Howlett of Britt, Hancock County Fair Queen. The Hancock County Fair Board added additional money to the purse. Racing action continues on Friday, July 26 with the Jackpot Junction IMCA Sprint Series including all regular classes. Hot laps begin at 7 p.m. with racing to follow at 7:30 p.m.
