Hughes hustles around Outlaw for ARMS win

Trevor Hughes won the USRA Modified main event.

With the dog days of summer in full effect, the USRA American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports made the call at Outlaw Motor Speedway just outside of Muskogee, Oklahoma.

Trevor Hughes stood tallest at the end of the night, capturing the VP Racing Fuels checkered flag.

A pair of heat races spelled trouble for Kenny and Sean Gaddis. Both drivers had trouble navigating turns three and four end of the speedway, forcing both Texas drivers to start the feature from the tail.

After the top six redraw it was series points leader Joe Duvall who brought the field to green flanked by Kansas native Lucas Gibbs.

At the drop of the green, Duvall took to the early lead and paced the field until lapped traffic loomed roughly eight laps in.

A close three-car battle between Duvall, Hughes and Gibbs was slowed by a sudden caution at the halfway point.

When the race resumed, Duvall looked to run away again, while Hughes tried to keep pace and Gibbs danced with the outside fence.

Disaster struck for Duvall on lap 19 as the powerplant under the hood expired just before the five-to-go mark.

Hughes inherited the lead while a furious battle for second through fifth came down to the wire.

Behind Hughes, Philip Houston gained ground in the point standings with a runner-up run and Sean Gaddis charged from 11th to third while Gibbs and Chase Hatton finished out the top five.

Heat race winners were Gibbs and Houston.

Saturday action moves down the road to Tri State Speedway in Pocola, Oklahoma. New owners Jake and Kelsie Davis are in their first full season at the helm.

They have added over $2,500 to the standard event purse, so the show will pay $2,500 to win and $350 to start.

Saturday’s action will be live on RacinDirt.tv for those unable to be at the track.
