Phillips flawless in Heartland Modified Tour debut
Terry Phillips won the USRA Modified main event.
Friday marked the culmination of over six months of planning and preparation to launch the Heartland Modified Tour presented by Real Racing Wheels. By the end of 30-lap USRA Modified main event at Humboldt Speedway, Terry Phillips stood in Victory Lane.
“The car was pretty good, we had made some changes, but didn't touch it all night,” said Phillips in Victory Lane. “These old Bloodline's are coming along.”
The feature ran without any Midwest Sheet Metal cautions to slow the pace. Phillips was not without challenges from Darron Fuqua. However, he worked lapped traffic perfectly and kept all the other contenders at bay.
“Just trying to maneuver though them,” Phillips further discussed abut his approach in lapped traffic. “The middle had some crumbs so it was a little hard to split them, but everybody kept their line pretty good so it wasn't too bad.”
Tyler Wolff made a lot of noise advancing from the outside of the fifth row to finish on the podium. The top five was completed with Dan Ebert and Trevor Hughes.
Also of note was the forward movement of Carlos Ahumada Jr. After not finishing his heat race, he had the deck stacked against him. In the 15-lap Real Racing Wheels "B" Feature, he passed 13 cars to finish second.
In the Wehrs Machine "A" Feature he ran 10th, but moved up 12 positions during the race. Passing 25 cars between the two events is not something typically seen in a single race night.
Heat race wins went to Phillips, Chase Sigg, Brian McGowan and Dakota Dale.
Action resumes Saturday at Humboldt Speedway with round two for the HMT presented by Real Racing Wheels with $2,000 up for grabs.
