Rain shortens races at Cresco Speedway, double features set for next week
CRESCO, Iowa -- Despite the threat of rain, hundreds of race fans arrived at the Cresco Speedway in anticipation of another great night of racing, sponsored this week by Evans Printing and Publishing. Unfortunately, Mother Nature proved to have other plans as only the heat races were completed, meaning fans will be treated to Double Features next Friday night, August 6 in Cresco.
In the night’s Heat races, Hornets Points Leader Russel Einck won Heat #1, while Steve Dwyer pulled away from the pack to win the second heat of the Hornet class. With only three laps down in their feature, the race was stopped after rain began to fall on the drivers in the Hornet class. Drivers Randy Koshatka and Ryan Happel were battling at the top before the races were cancelled for the night due to the rain.
In the Street Stock heats, the #41 car of Carissa Wagner led the entire race to take the checkered flag in Heat #1, with Dan Kohnen finishing second. In the second heat, Cresco’s Robert Malli battled Terry Nicoll, also of Cresco, throughout the heat to pick up the win.
Ben Moudry in the #85 car took the lead after two laps and raced on to finish first in Heat #1 of the Hobby Stock feature. Jeremy Moellers moved up from the back of the pack to take second place. In the second heat, Steve Holthaus led the entire way to take the victory in Heat #2, while drivers Justin Elsbernd and Jimmy Broszeit kept it close and finished second and third respectively. In Heat #3 of Hobby Stocks, Points Leader Kevin Donlan pulled out the victory, while Kurt Krauskof finished second. Driver Bryan Webb led after three laps before heading to the infield after developing car troubles. Both winners in their heats, Holthaus and Donlan are separated by only one point in the Hobby Stock class.
Taking the lead away from the #02 car after the second lap, Vince Corbin took the checkered flag in Heat #1 of the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds class. Jacob Dahle, driver of the #02 car, finished second. In Heat #2 of the Midwest Modifieds, Troy Hale captured the lead from Jerry Young in the final lap to win his heat.
Scott Bauer and Tory Reicks stayed one and two during the entire first heat of the USRA Stock Car class, with Bauer pulling away late to take the victory. In the second heat, Kevin Bidne took the lead after lap two to finish in first, while Points Leader Tom Schmitt finished second.
In the USRA Modifieds class, Ron Konkel, second in points, moved his way up from the back to take the lead after three laps and go on to victory in the first heat of the night for the Modifieds. Larry Schmidt, who led early on, finished second. Despite being involved in an early crash in Heat #2, Dan Bohr battled with Tim Heins to take the lead on Lap 6 and the checkered flag.
Due to the rain during the Hornet Feature, the night’s features were cancelled. Area racing fans are invited next week, Friday, August 6, to the Cresco Speedway for twice the amount of action with two features. Hot laps begin at 7:15 p.m. with racing, sponsored by Waukon Power Sports, immediately following.
