Wetzstein defeats Timm in duel to the checkers at Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. -- Mother Nature tried to stop the racing action at the Deer Creek Speedway Saturday night, but the crew and racers outdueled her to the checkers tonight. Just before hot laps she slowed the opening ceremonies and also dumped a little shower on the speedway during the heats but the show was ran in its entirety.
A special thanks to Randy and Patty Eastvold from Hanson Tire in LeRoy who threw an extra $100 to each class tonight. A $50 bonus went to the first-place driver and a $50 bonus to the second-place driver.
The USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mod feature event was up first with Erik Kanz jumping to the early lead. Todd Borwege moved into second while the field raced two and three wide for lap one. Shaun Walski took over third on lap fourth behind Josh Smith.
Dan Tenold was in fifth with Kylie Kath and Brandon Hare side by side behind him. Hare moved into fifth on lap four as Smith worked past Borwege moved into second. With six completed Hare and Walski raced for fourth with Kath looking to get past them both as a caution flew.
On the restart Kanz led, Borwege moved back into second with Kath, Smith and Hare three wide for third. On the next lap Hare took over second as the caution once again flew. This time on the restart Kanz led with Kath, Hare and Borwege three wide for second. Hare took the spot with Kath following through to third on lap eight.
With ten completed Borwege and Smith raced for fourth while up front Kanz was checking out on the field. Late in the race Parker Hale worked into fifth as he worked past Borwege after starting last in the twenty car field.
As the checkers flew it was Kanz, Hare, Kath, Smith and Hale in the top five.
The final race of the night was probably the best of the night with two of the best USRA RHS Modified drivers battling it out side by side for the win over the last seventeen laps.
On the drop of the green Bob Timm and Lucas Schott raced for the lead with Steve Wetzstein in third. Brandon Davis and Brandon Aggen raced for fourth. A caution with six down saw Timm, Wetzstein and Schott three wide for the lead on the restart. Just as the three exited turn the Schott machine shut down bringing out the caution again.
On the restart the race for the win started with Timm up high on the cushion and Wetzstein running down low, Davis sat in third while Donlinger made it up to fourth on lap eight after starting fourteenth on the field. With eleven down Timm still held the slight advantage over Wetzstein many laps by a bumper and sometimes a half car as they crossed the line. Davis and Donlinger now raced for third with Davis keeping his momentum working up top.
Lap nineteen saw Wetzstein with the lead but Timm retook it at lap twenty. Wetzstein took over on lap twenty one again but Timm got the upper hand on lap twenty four.
As they crossed the line it was Wetzstein scored with the win ahead of Timm, Davis, Donlinger and Nate Wasmund who charged up to fifth late in the race.
