CRESCO, Iowa (July 14, 2002) - An ideal night for racing greeted fans and competitors on Sunday night at Cresco Speedway. A full field of cars in all 5 classes, combined with a well prepared, and very fast racetrack, made for one of the best nights racing this year. Action throughout the night was absolutely great, with lots of 2, 3 and even 4 wide racing in all classes. Sponsors for this night's racing action were Squier Distributing of Charles City and K & S Wheel of Waterloo.

In the Hornet division, Steve Dwyer of LaCrosse won his second feature at Cresco this year, as he held off a challenge from Gary Gulrud over the last few laps. Finishing third was Matt Beck of Lime Springs, fourth was Randy Koshatka of Cresco and Scott Spilde of Cresco was fifth. Steve Dwyer and Scott Spilde won the heats.

Factory Stock saw a new driver pick up his first ever win as Jesse Miller of Elma came from back in the pack to win the feature. Miller made is winning pass in turn 4 on the last lap as the top 5 cars were all battling together over the last several laps. Miller used the top of the track to go from third to first on the last lap. Trent Turner of Caledonia, MN was second, Keith Eischens of Taopi, MN was third, Lee Nuehring of Monona was fourth and Jeremy Oakes of Spring Grove finished fifth. Heats were won by Lee Nuehring and Jimmy Broszert of Postville.

The Modified class put on a great show, as the drivers battled side by side, at times 3 and 4 wide, throughout the feature. Kevin Pittman of Waterloo and Darin Duffy of Hazelton ran together from the middle of the pack to the front and put on a great show, racing side by side throughout the last several laps. Duffy made the low side work with two laps to go and take the lead, but Pittman, running at the top of the track most of the night, used his high groove and shot by Duffy on the last lap in turn three to edge Duffy at the finish. Dan Bohr of Decorah worked his way up to third, Josh Secor of Cedar Falls had a great run to fourth and Tim Heins of Elkader was fifth.

Duffy, Heins and Todd Kelley of Fredericksburg won modified heats. Duffy won the Dash for Cash, with Bohr second and Heins third.

The Hobby Stocks put were again true to form as they put on a great show, also racing 2, 3 and 4 wide throughout their feature. Bryan Webb of Decorah picked up his first win of the season at Cresco, but it was not easy. He lead the entire race, but was seriously challenged by Kevin Donlan of Mabel over the last several laps. Donlan tried low and high, but Webb proved to be too strong as he raced to the win. Dolan finished second, Tory Reicks of Lawler was third, Jeremy Moellers of Elma finished fourth and Steve Holthaus of Cresco was fifth.

Webb, Reicks and Darrin Walsh of Postville won the Hobby heats. Walsh also won the Cash Dash and elected to take "Gordy's A Challenge" and start at the rear of the A feature. He worked his way up to third in the feature and looked to be in good shape to win the race and pick up the extra challenge bonus, but his car threw its belts and he retired from the feature.

Last on the track were the Stock Cars, and they again put on a great race, as Gordy's A Challenge was accepted by Scott Bauer of Riceville, as he won the Cash Dash and elected to start at the rear of the A feature. Bauer worked his way up from his last starting position to pass Jeff Schluetter of New Hampton in turn two of the last lap to pick up the win, collecting the feature cash, Gordy's Challenge cash and he was also the evening's Mystery Driver in the Stock Car class with added another $50 to his night's winnings. Schluetter finished second, Mike Bergan of Cresco had a great run in a borrowed car to place third, Kevin Bidne of Decorah was fourth and Marinus Mlady of Cresco was fifth.

Stock Car heats were won by Rodney Zubrod of Cresco and Mlady. Bauer won the Cash Dash, followed by Mlady, Zubrod and Em Frethiem of Decorah.

Next Sunday night races are sponsored by Little Buckaroos Racing & Repair of Riceville. Hot laps start at 6:00 p.m., racing Hornets, Factory Stocks, Hobby Stocks, Stock Cars and Modifieds.
