CRESCO, Ia. (May 26, 2002) - Bronner Machine and Dan's Standard sponsored tonight's races at the Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa. Tonight's racing action featured the Modifieds, Hobby Stock, and Stock Car, along with the Bumper-to-Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Cars.

Starting out the night were the Sprint Car time trials. Blake Feese set the track record last year with a lap of 13.8 seconds and all cars were going for a time just as fast today. No one was able to reach that time but Mike Reinke had the fastest time, clocking in 14.619 seconds, which averaged to 92.346 MPH. Second was Travis Whitney with a lap time of 14.766 seconds and in a time of 14.869 seconds was Colin Northway.

Following the Sprint Car time trials were the heat races. Hobby Stocks were up first with heat wins going to Brent Tweeten, Jason Schlangen, Kevin Donlan, and Darrin Walch. Sprint Cars were back on the track next with heat wins going to Mike Reinke, Darrell Dodd, Travis Cram, and Joe Roe.

Stock Cars were the next to take the track with heat wins going out to Brian Tank, Brian Gjere, and Jeff Schluetter. Finally, the Modifieds took the track with Todd Suhr, Todd Schaufenbuel, and Darin Duffy picking up the heat wins.

For the first time this season at the Cresco track, there were consolations to be run in the Sprint Cars, Hobby Stock, and Stock Car divisions. The Sprint Cars had two classes of consolations and the top three drivers advanced to the feature. Travis Whitney took the checkered in the first consolation, followed by Scott Neitzel and Dave Enders. In the second consolation, John Sernett finished first, Jim Melis was in second, and Wayne Modjeski finished third.

The Hobby consolation race advanced the top four finishers into the feature. Time Gebel crossed the checkered flag first, followed by David Seegmiller, Dustin Panos, and Patty Fosaaen. The top five advanced in the Stock Car consolation, and those top five were Kevin Bidne, Matt Sweeney, Gerald Peter, Lester Malstedt Jr., and Bryan Webb.

The Sprint Cars were the first feature race on the track this Sunday night. Joe Roe had won the last three races at Cresco Speedway and was hoping for a fourth consecutive win tonight. Roe had a lot of competition though as Terry McCarl and Travis Cram had their eyes on the checkered flag. McCarl definately had the fastest car on the track, moving from 15th position to 3rd in just 7 laps. With a restart on lap 11, McCarl passed Roe for second and was gaining on Cram. With one lap to go, McCarl bipassed Cram and brought home the checkered flag. Cram finished in second, followed by Joe Roe and Colin Northway.

Darrin Walch started on the front row in the Hobby Stock feature and wanted to keep that position until the end. Walch had to hold off a very determined Steve Holthaus who was on the move to take the checkered. Walch did hold him off and was able to cross the line first, followed closely by Holthaus. Bob Praska finished in third and Kevin Donlan picked up the fourth position.

The Stock Car feature was next on the track. After a little bit of bad luck the last two weeks, Brian Tank was starting in the pole position and hoping to grab the checkered flag for the first time this season. But Scott Bauer was on the move, jumping from 9th place to 3rd in just 2 laps. On lap 9, Bauer took the lead from Tank and held onto it until the end. Bauer finished in first while Tank, Brian Gjere, and Lynn Panos rounded out the top three.

Ron Konkel was also hoping to change his luck tonight in the Modified feature, but he would have to hold off a tough Darin Duffy, who is sitting first in the current point standings. Konkel started in first but Duffy took it over and was leading at the half-way point. Konkel desperately wanted that position back and with seven laps to go, he got it back and picked up his first checkered flag of the season. Duffy finished in second, Todd Suhr finished third, and Keven Pittman picked up fourth.

Join us next week at the Cresco Speedway as KVIKing Gold Radio and Pepsi Cola Bottling sponsor the night's racing action.
