Clinton scoress 100th victory Friday at Fayette County
Dylan Clinton won the USRA Hobby Stock main event.
The heat wave came early on Friday night at Fayette County Speedway in West Union, Iowa, as four USRA classes were in action at the Northeast Iowa race track for Season Championship Night on the 3/8-mile oval.
With several track championship titles on the line, the racing did not disappoint in any of the four feature races.
In the Medieval USRA Stock Car main event, Kevin Donlan of Decorah held a narrow 20-point lead over Waukon’s Dan Jones at the start of the night.
After a tough heat race, Donlan had to start at the back of the nine-car field, while Jones started on the outside pole.
Jones quickly worked his way to the front of the pack, but USRA ace Mitch Hovden of Decorah navigated his No. 15 car to the runner-up spot on the first lap from his fourth-place starting position.
Hovden pulled to the bumper of Jones and tailed him for the early laps, before challenging for the lead midway through the race.
Jones and Hovden fought side-by-side lap after lap, before a slowed car ahead of them allowed Hovden to get around Jones.
The pass did not last for long, as Jones got back around Hovden just as the caution flag flew - setting up a potential three-car battle for the win as Donlan had worked his way up to third place.
However, a mechanical issue on Hovden’s hot rod forced him to the pits, where he retired from the race and left Jones and Donlan—the top two drivers in the points standings—to fight it out.
Despite a strong effort from Donlan, Jones was able to go on to pick up his first win of the 2023 season at Fayette County Speedway.
The runner-up finish for Donlan was enough for him to secure the track championship ahead of Jones, with Hovden finishing in third. In fourth was Brandon Dietrich of Waukon, while Hovden claimed fifth with a DNF.
Hovden is currently in second place in the USRA national points standings, just 108 points back of leader Derek Green.
In another action-packed feature that had another points title up for grabs, Josh Roney of Postville was able to get win No. 2 of his season at the track after holding off a strong field of USRA B-Mods.
Roney started second on the grid and held off several bids for the lead by runner-up finisher Kyle Anderson of Decorah.
In third was Walker’s Alex Zwanziger, who would go on to claim the runner-up spot in the track points championship after some late-race dramatics involving points leader Dan Hovden of Decorah.
Hovden was running in the top-three for the majority of the race, but brought out a caution with just a handful of laps remaining in the 20-lap feature.
Hovden had a 67-point lead going into the night, but had to drop to the tail of the field, giving Zwanziger a chance to overtake the top spot.
Zwanziger restarted the race in fifth and needed to pass as many cars as he could to make things interesting, as he worked his way up to third.
Meanwhile, Hovden returned to form at the back of the pack and passed several cars in the waning laps to secure enough points to claim the track championship.
Finishing fourth in the feature was Jason Schlangen of Cresco, while Dale Schwamman of Fort Atkinson rounded out the top five.
Schwamman is currently leading the USRA B-Mod rookie points standings.
In the Summit USRA Weekly Racing Seires national points standings, Hovden currently sits just 21 points back of Shadren Turner.
Not to be outdone by the Stock Cars or B-Mods, the USRA Hobby Stock main event was also full of excitement as West Union’s Dylan Clinton claimed his eighth feature win at the track this season, and the 100th of his racing career.
The win, however, did not come easy for the driver of the No. 18K machine as outside polesitter Justin Hanson of Hawkeye was in command of the race for the majority of its 20 lap entirety.
Hanson led each of the first 18 laps, with Clinton hot on his chase from the midway point of the race on.
With just two laps remaining in the feature, Clinton got around Hanson and led the final two circuits to get the victory and add some insurance points to his already-clinched track championship.
Hanson went on to take second, while Daryl Moss of West Union was third, Caden Helle of Garnavillo was fourth and Junior Boyer of Calmar was fifth.
As previously mentioned, Clinton had already locked up the track championship the previous week, but he had bigger goals on his mind as he currently sits in second in the USRA national points standings.
In that battle, he trails Chris Hovden by 115 points.
In the USRA Tuner division, it was Elkader’s Josh Hills who parked it in victory lane on Friday night as he capitalized on a front-row starting position to earn his third feature win of the season at FCS.
Hills held off eventual points champion and current USRA national points leader Brad Stahl of Castalia for the win, as Stahl passed four cars in the race to take second.
In third was Braiden Schaufenbuel of New Hampton, while Ty Monserud of Waukon was fourth and John Gilson of Strawberry Point was fifth after he started 12th on the field.
While the race for the USRA Tuner track championship was technically still up in the air, Castalia’s Brad Stahl essentially had it wrapped up by showing up Friday night.
Schaufenbuel finished behind him in second, 85 points behind.
