Wetzstein wins at Dodge County Speedway; Angst secures track title
KASSON, Minn. - Race fans that came out to the Dodge County Speedway got some bang for their buck Sunday night. There were two make-up features to be taken care of tonight from the rain-soaked Thunderbird Open on July 14.
It was also Fan Appreciation Night with a plethora of prize giveaways and throw-outs to the crowd from Pepsi, KOWZ Radio, O’Reilly Auto Parts and WIX Filters. The top prizes were two pairs of tickets to the NASCAR Nationwide Series race at the Iowa Speedway compliments of Fastenal in Rochester.
Eighty-eight cars signed in.
First up was the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods and 10 cars answered the bell. Kylie Kath took the lead and showed the way to his first checkered flag after he fended off Brandon Hare. Hare spun and went to the tail but rebounded to finish third behind second-place finisher Ben Moudry. Josh Gessell and Jacob Bleess finished out the top-5.
After all of the preliminary heat race events were completed, things were set to get the features underway.
When the full moon rose up over turn 2, you just wondered if things would turn ugly. They did for a bit when the USRA Karl Performance Parts B-Mods arrived on the track for their feature. Ben Moudry took the early lead and the field went four wide for fourth. Jason Schlangen bolted to second and then challenged for the lead.
The leaders got into slower traffic on lap 7 when Moudry got caught up by a spun car. Schlangen led on the restart while Moudry and Brandon Hare wrestled for second. Several more cautions ensued and it came down to a green-white-checkered dash to the finish.
Schlangen held on for his first win at Dodge County. Moudry survived another run-in with a slower car for second. Hare finished in third with Greg Mattick and Kylie Kath in the top-5.
Tonight was the final night for track points in the USRA RHS Modifieds. Josh Angst led Steve Wetzstein by 15 points when they rolled out for their feature race. Todd Scharkey bolted off of the front row to lead the early laps.
Wetzstein challenged Scharkey up front and made a strong move to the lead in turn 3. The leaders stretched things out, but all eyes were on Jason Cummins, who started 12th and was on the top of the track and sliced through traffic. He was up to fourth when a caution came out with five laps to go.
Wetzstein ran away for his second win, while Cummins finished his charge in second. Scharkey was third and Angst was fourth. Angst’s finish ended up being enough to win the title by two points. Doug Hillson was the fifth-place finisher.
The Dodge County Speedway will now sit idle through the month of August with no race programs on the schedule. The roar will return at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 5, when the USMTS Modifieds come to town for the “Kasson Klash.” That will be a part of The Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s General Stores National Championship and will also feature the make-up main event from the Thunderbird Open. All of the regular divisions except for USRA RHS Modifieds will be in action for their final night of track points.
