Southern Iowa Speedway adds June 18 Deery race to mid-season championship program
OSKALOOSA, Iowa (March 14, 2003) - A 15th race has been added to 2003 Deery Brothers Summer Series schedule.
Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa will run the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Model series along with its mid-season championship night program for sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks on Wednesday, June 18.
The 40-lap feature will pay $2,000 to win.
"Oskaloosa is a hotbed for Stock Car-type racing and this will be a great chance for our fans to see a traveling series of this caliber," track promoter Bill McCroskey said. "It adds a little variety to the show and we look forward to a good turnout. The date should fit well for drivers because there are no other series races in June. This will be an opportunity for them to race an extra night."
Twelve previous series events have been held on the fast half-mile dirt track at Oskaloosa since 1989, producing 10 different winners.
Mike Smith of Jewell won Deery races at SIS in 1992 and 2001. Jeff Aikey of Cedar Falls topped 1995 and 2000 series features there.
"We're kind of centrally located between a lot of the tracks that run I.M.C.A. Late Models," said McCroskey. "Nobody has to travel too far or worry about missing their regular weekly programs. Another plus is that we're a neutral track. All the Late Model drivers are going to be equal because none of them run here regularly."
Starting grids that evening for the Modified, Stock and Hobby features will be determined by points. Non-sanctioned sprints will run in heat races to decide their feature lineup.
"Southern Iowa Speedway is one of four tracks on the Deery schedule where our member drivers don't race weekly, so this will be another night for fans to see outstanding Late Model racing in addition to the regular show," I.M.C.A. Vice President of Operations Brett Root said. "Oskaloosa is a big track and has always hosted excellent Deery races, as the number of different drivers who have won there attest."
