Cummins tops USRA Modified action at Deer Creek
SPRING VALLEY, Minn. - The USRA Modifieds pulled onto the track for their feature Saturday night at the Deer Creek Speedway and, as is typically the case, stole the show by having the best race of the night.
Brad Waits moved past Mick Glenn for the lead on lap 1 with Mike Sorensen and Bobby Swanson working past Glenn into second and third as they raced hard for position.
With three completed, Sorensen started to pressure Waits for the lead as Jason Cummins and Steve Wetzstein worked into fifth and sixth.
With six laps completed, Nate Wasmund tried to fend off Cummins to no avail as he took over fourth. Two laps later as Wasmund battled with Wetzstein, Cummins worked under Swanson for third.
Cummins took third with 15 laps left and quickly started to gain on Sorensen just as he started to work Waits for the lead again.
The caution flew with 12 to go as Josh Mattick and Todd Scharkey crashed hard on the front straight, heavily damaging both cars. On the restart Waits led with Cummins moving into second.
Cummins took the lead on the next lap and slowly started to pull away from the field while Waits and Sorensen continued their battle for second.
Waits came home second with Sorensen, Wasmund and Wetzstein rounding out the top-5.
Hat races were won by Sorensen, Wasmund and Wetzstein.
