Jake fends off Fito in Gallardo 1-2 finish at West Texas Raceway

Father’s Day is only nine days away but Jake Gallardo didn’t offer up any early gifts for his dad, Fito Gallardo, in Friday’s main event for the USRA American Racer Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports at the West Texas Raceway in Lubbock.

Instead, the 28-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., stated sixth in the 25-lap main event and then tracked down his father, taking the lead on lap 12 and then holding him off for the victory at the high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval.

Fito Gallardo—the 2014 USRA Modified National Champion—settled for a $1,500 runner-up paycheck while Jake Gallardo—the 2015 USRA Modified National Champion and last year’s runner-up to Lucas Schott in the national points—pocketed $2,000 for his efforts, winning by 1.229 seconds.

Fan not only witnessed a stellar battle for the lead throughout the race but a second eye was glued to Kale Westover, who blasted from 14th on the grid to claim a $1,000 third-place prize.

Westover passed Philip Houston for the third spot with 18 laps in the books, and A.J. Vasquez squirted past Houston with four laps remaining to finish fourth.

Mark Smith, Triston Dycus, James McCreery, Max Eddie Thomas and Chris Huckeba completed the top 10.

McCreery, Thomas and Michael Walker each received a $100 cash bonus courtesy of American Racer. During the drivers meeting at each event, officials draw three random names for a $100 cash bonus. To be eligible, the driver must attend the drivers meeting and have competed in the previous ARMS event.

After three races, Thomas extended his advantage in the series standings and leads by 36 markers (264 to 228) over Huckeba. McCreery is third with 222 points, followed by Dycus (214), Sean Gaddis (206), Michael Walker (198), Tyler Davis (178), Kenny Gaddis (177), Joe Duvall (170) and Westover (149).

In Friday night’s Medieval USRA Stock Car feature race, Shane Priddy of Merkel came out on top after a great back-and-forth with Odessa’s Gary Kerr Jr. Dustin White was third, Travis Graves finished fourth and the fifth spot went to Jed Smith.

The USRA Limited Mod main event saw track points leader Cory Williams of Slaton nab his third win of the 2021 season with eighth-starting making a charge at the race-long leader but eventually settling for second-place money. J.P. Vasquez Jr., Leland Cruz and Zach Gossett rounded out the top five.

Saturday stop in Amarillo: On Saturday, the American Racer USRA Modified Series presented by Day Motor Sports heads north to the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo for another $2,000-to-win blockbuster.

Pits are slated to open at 4:30 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps begin at 6:45 and racing gets underway at 7.

Grandstand tickets are $15 for everybody 12 and older while seniors (65+) and members of the military are just $12. Kids ages 5 to 11 are $5 and children under 5 are free. Pit passes are $35.

Support classes include AA&A Windshields USRA Limited Mods, Limited Late Models, Air Compressor Solutions Street Stocks and USRA Tuners. Fans can also look forward to a huge fireworks show presented by Gossett Garage.
