Mather, Greiner, Schroeder, McDaniel, Phillips score on Oskaloosa Herald Night at Southern Iowa Speedway

OSKALOOSA, Iowa - Racing action at the Southern Iowa Speedway in Oskaloosa, Iowa, resumed after a two-week break in the action, and race fans had a chance to get two weeks of the Oskaloosa Herald free of charge just by filling out a card while the young race fans got a chance to win back-to-school backpacks.

The main events kicked off with the USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Car feature. Matt Greiner of Washington took his second straight win at the Mahaska County Half-Mile Monster. Greiner held off several challenges from Oskaloosa driver Brain Mitrisin who later ended his run with mechanical problems. The second spot went to Osky driver Howard Gordon Jr. with A.J. Johnson of Osky taking the third spot and Rick Todd of Des Moines in fourth.

The Mid-America 305 Winged Sprints made their second appearance of the 2008 season with Tasker Phillips staying perfect with the win. Phillips battled with Chad Huston of Jamesport, Mo., And Louis Lynch of Glenwood, Mo., who tried to hold off the young gun that turned 16 years old one day earlier and has won three of the last four outings. Huston held on on for the runner-up spot with Lynch in third and last year's champion, Mike Mayberry of Fremont, in fourth.

The Carter's Manufacturing USRA B-Mod feature was a thriller with Bill Gibson of Knoxville looking to the checkers but Andrew Schroeder of Keswick was the spoiler after making the pass in the final turn for the win. Gibson took second with Leroy Groenindyk of Oskaloosa in third and Ottumwa racer Cory Brown in fourth.

The USRA Hobby Stock feature went to Jason McDaniel of Eldon, who took the lead on lap 5 from Ottumwa's Bob Lynch and Dustin Griffiths who were battling for the top spot. The contest was slowed for about five minutes on lap 10 for rain, but racing resumed with McDaniel taking his fifteenth win as he continues his run for the USRA Casey's General Stores Weekly Racing Series National Championship in the USRA Hobby Stock division. Agency driver Danny Thrasher finished second with Griffiths in third and Lynch taking fourth.

The final feature was the MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds with Colt Mather of Webster taking the win after leading all 18 laps with last year's track champion, Brandon Banks of Washington, in second. Josh Truman of Indianola took the third spot with a brand new car he debuted Wednesday night and Oskaloosa driver Steven Blattler grabbed fourth.

With the weather trying to spoil the night, the mechanics races were postponed until next Wednesday, Aug. 20, and will be staged along with the powder puff races on Paul DeGeest for Sheriff Night at the Southern Iowa Speedway featuring MUSCO Lighting USRA Modifieds, USRA Karl Chevrolet Stock Cars, Carter’s Manufacturing USRA B-Mods and USRA Hobby Stocks.

Pit gates open at 5 p.m., grandstands open at 5:30, hot laps are at 7:15 and the first green flag waves at 7:30 sharp.
