Patch claims Don Garst Memorial win
MAYETTA, Kan. -- Travis Patch continued his trek towards a USRA National Championship and a second consecutive Thunderhill Speedway Track Championship on Saturday in Mayetta, Kan., at the Annual Don Garst Memorial race. Patch became a first-time winner of the event, and added his name to a list of winners that includes Bill Robison, Levi McGowen, Rick Stallbaumer, Kerry Davis, Scott Brown, Jeff Atkinson, Tom Charles and Tim Karrick.
Patch needed a little luck to pick up the win, as Darrick Klima had moved past early race leader Steven Bowers Jr. on lap 10 and was running away from the field. Patch moved into second on lap 13, but was gaining little ground on the leader. When it looked as if the race was all but over, Klima left the track on lap 18 with fuel pump problems, placing Patch squarely in the top spot. He would cruise the final two laps to take the win.
Mark Zorn, who started on the inside of the fifth row claimed the second spot, and Bowers finished in third.
Leif Weyer claimed a well-deserved first career victory in the USRA Stock Car division. Weyer, the current points leader, assumed the lead on lap six after 2005 Champion Troy Baumgartner cut down a tire after returning to the track for the first time this season. Weyer then held off a hard charging Jeff Rigsby to claim the top spot.
His win, Weyer snapped a two-race win streak by Josh Smallback, who experienced mechanical difficulties and finished well back in the field.
Waylon Banks continued his hot streak in the USRA Hobby Stock division as he grabbed his second consecutive win, and his fourth win in the last five races. Banks swapped the lead early in the race with David Bailey, and then held off Bailey and Tim Patch later in the race to take the top honors. Banks still trails Tim Patch in the points standings, who finished in the second spot.
Thunderhill will return to action next Saturday, June 3, with Thundersprints, USRA Modifieds, Superstocks, USRA Stock Cars, USRA Hobby Stocks and Pony Stocks all in action. Hot laps start at 7 p.m. and races begin at 7:30.
