Doelle digs deep for Fox Ridge Super win
by Chris Stepan
ARCADIA, Wis. (Aug. 10, 2001) - The Fox Ridge Speedway in Arcadia welcomed a regular racing program with a very strong field of WISSOTA Late Models highlighting the action once again.
The Street Stocks were the first division on the speedway for their main event, which saw Brad Dennis use the outside of the front row to his advantage to assume the top spot and take off into the lead. Tom Hund sat in second and began to hound Dennis for the lead, while Jim Randall and Travis Krause were on the move from mid-pack and appeared in the top five early on.
Randall got through traffic first and began to pressure Dennis for the lead on lap 4, which he stole away from Brad on the next circuit. Krause also was making charged through the field and appeared in third on lap 6. Travis then began to put pressure on Dennis for second and slipped by the # 55 into the runner-up spot and set off after Randall up front.
By this time, Randall had built up a sizeable advantage and just as Krause was trying to reel him in, the caution blinked on and bunched up the field. On the restart Krause and Randall were locked tight in competition for the lead and ran almost side-by-side for the top spot for the next 6 circuits until the caution flew again.
This time on the start Randall held the advantage and continued to hold off Krause, but Travis was not going to give up and constantly pressured the leader. Randall was up to the challenge and held off Krause for the win. Dennis recorded his best career finish in third with Shaun Wehlage and Hund rounding out the top five runners.
Mark Teske was looking to make it three in a row in the Super Stocks by taking off into the lead at the drop of the green flag and stretching out to a big advantage over a great battle was ensuing just behind the leader as John Doelle, Curt Myers and Troy Brand were locked in a great war for position. Doelle got out into second and set off after Teske up front.
A caution blinked on with 7 laps remaining, putting Doelle right on the rear bumper of Teske up front and as soon as the green was displayed Doelle went to work and shot by into the lead, which he would hold to the end. Doelle was now up front, but Teske was under pressure for second as Myers began to pressure him for the position.
Doelle was on the top of his game and held off Teske for his second win of the season. Myers ran in third with newcomer, Nick Herrick slipping by Brand for fourth at the line.
In the Modified main, Bob Timm wasted little time taking the lead early on in his # 49 up on the cushion and quickly began to extend it over the battle for second between Todd Scharkey and Dan Hesch. Scharkey stole the second spot and began to reel in Timm up front when a caution came out, putting Scharkey right on the rear bumper of the leader.
On the restart, Scharkey tried the inside of the race track and slid by Timm into the lead, only to have Timm power back by on the cushion to regain the top spot. The battle continued for several laps until Scharkey was able to secure the lead away and set off into the night. Timm continued to apply heavy pressure, but could not muster enough to move back by into the lead.
Scharkey remained composed and continually held off Timm for the lead and raced to his second win in a row at the Ridge. Timm came home in second with Hank Rollinger, Steve Wetzstein and Troy Langowski rounding out the top five finishers.
Keith Foss sat on the pole for the Late Model feature and took the lead at the start with Lance Matthees and Eric Pember duking it out for second right away on lap 1. Pember held off Matthees for the time being as Lance began to receive heavy pressure from Ron Mahder for third.
Once Matthees figured out that his # 90 would work well on the high side of the speedway, he shot up to the cushion and powered into second and set off after Foss. Matthees caught Foss in a hurry and tried to roll around him on the high side, but Foss was solid on the inside of the track and held off Lance pup front.
Meanwhile, Bob Timm, who started 14th on the grid was flying around the high side of the track and appeared in fifth before the half-way point of the race. Back up front, Foss held on to the lead as Matthees searched for a way around. Timm continued his onslaught on the field as he blew by Pember into third on lap 17 and had just stolen second away from Matthees when Lance slowed his # 90 and retired with only 2 laps to go.
Timm gave it one last chance to steal the win from Foss on the last lap, but could not muster enough to take the top spot away as Foss ran to his third win of the season. Timm was second, Pember third and Jason Schill recorded his best career finish by nipping Jeff Keeney at the line for fourth.
Racing resumes this Friday at the Ridge with action for Modifieds, WISSOTA Super Stocks, WISSOTA Street Stocks and the WISSOTA Late Models. For more information, please check out the tracks website at www.foxridgespeedway.com.
